My set up is very similar to yours but I connect from the daughter-board on the M2A-VM HDMI (on-board graphics) directly to my plasma using HDMI-HDMI.

DVI-HDMI is a direct digital connection. Video-wise is the same as HDMI-HDMI, just no sound.

My connection to the TV was just a test (intending to build a specific HTPC for that). PC with TV card in is now connected by DVI-DVI (digital) to an 1920 * 1200 LCD monitor. PQ also very good, though possibly not quite as good as on the Bravia TV.

Okay.
Making progress now. I installed the cyberdvd 8 trial and the video looks good. It is better than the nvidia purevideo decoder by far.
Picture is judder free and no problems at all.
Mediaprtal is still not too fancy so I may go with DBVviewer except that is still kind of a beta imho.
You have to manually set up mce remote etc don't you?
Is there a better way than to add dvbviewer to vista mce for full htpc functionality?
I use .iso files for dvd storage so I use daemon tools to automount my iso files.
GBPVR is a great app but doesn't support the hvr2200.
I also only have a wireless adapter to set up an epg grabber but it doesnt function flawlessly as I also use an av send and receiver from the lounge to my bedroom with a remote extender so I will struggle to set up the epg properly.

Just did a quick search on the gbpvr forum and there are reports of people using the HVR2200 successfully with GBPVR.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. Yes I know HDMI and DVI are direct digital connections. What I was asking was had No1Daemon tried DS248's suggestion to try connecting DVI-HDMI? Because if I had it correct he was using the component out on the video card to a receiver (capable of upscaling) and then to his display. That would appear to be several levels of D-A and A-D conversions that might not help the video quality. The fewer links in the chain while you try and get a system up and running the better.

Hi

I actually haven't tried that. It is on my 2 do list if I am still having trouble. It looks like I may have solved my quality issue I hope for now anyway with the powerdvd 8 codecs.

Although my av receiver is capable of upscaling I don't believe it does in all cases and I think it is mostly for upscaling composite to svideo and the reverse.

I should still be going digital straight through to the television with no analogue to digital convesion.(thats my understanding of it anyway)

I theory picture quality should never be affected by what media player software you run (MediaPoratl, GBPVR, DVBViewer etc) These programs just make use of codecs and other subsystems. The application doesn't do any processing of the image. It may be that the application, for whatever reason, is forcing/choosing the wrong codecs. You should make use of the graphedit "Connect to Remote Graph" feature to see what's going on.

I will attempt to. I have tried to use graphedit before but had no luck. Is there a good how to or something for it that you know of?

This may be the case, however the applications should not be able to add hidden settings if this is the case because there are clear differences in both FPS and quality when using dvbviewer compared to mediaportal, seemingly with the same renderer and codecs and decoder enabled and selected.
I wish there was an easier way to determine what is the cause of the differences.

Start playing a dvb-t channel then open graphedit and on the file menu click connect to remote graph you should just see 1, connect to it, have a look at the codecs/renderers that are being used. Now do the same with the other application, what is the difference if any?

Which codecs/renderers in particular do I look at?
When I select connect to remote graph, the is a window with one choice and when I select that, I get a window with not much except a grey background in it.
I assume I am then supposed to select some graph filters, but which ones?
