That looks pretty hopeful - it's a basic structured cabling system. Presumably you could fairly easily patch a master filter in there, which would remove the various line stubs of all the phone jacks which are showing up as the big gaps in the spectrum above.

Where about are you?

Tauranga. I'm trying to see if I can get Chorus to come back as part of the free install. Otherwise I think I will just pay them to do it.

I come to Tauranga fairly regularly if you want someone other than Chorus to check your wiring and install a master filter.

let me ask.

if the attenuation does not change when the sync speed halfs does that prove it is not the wiring?

It depends exactly why the sync rate is changing. Some wiring issues show up as attenuation changes but a lot won't.

No. Attenuation can be an indicator of line length & condition, but it is not a be-all descriptor for line state. There are a multitude of other factors that could affect the sync speed without negatively impacting attenuation levels.

So it turns out Spark were cutting the speed in half each night 6pm-12am.  Moved to the 500GB plan and now have no issues, constant speed all day.

Just have to sort this master filter out to see if I can get anything faster than the 7.5mbps I am getting.

They told me they were doing it when I was trying to figure out what was going on.

Changed to the 500GB plan rebooted my modem and the speed was back to full.

your connection speed was dropping at the physical dsl layer however... that alone makes this sound very unlikely.

so a Spark CSR told you, between 6pm and 12am they drop you speed?

I suspect there is a miss understanding here, and what they have inferred is you may experience speed drops between peak time (being 6pm~12am) due to their traffic management policy on the unlimited plan.

Yes that is what I was told. I spoke to 3 different people and was very clear that my physical speed was dropping, they all mentioned traffic management. Seems like a standard response for them.

It's working better now though that's all I'm worried about.

This has absolutely nothing to do with your ADSL connection dropping out and re-syncing. I suspect this is a miscommunication - it is extremely unlikely that Spark are deliberately cutting your speed every night.

Definitely recommend doing this.

I think that's the key here - perhaps the level 1 tech support is getting confused. They cannot make your xDSL resync at a lower rate every night.

Exactly this.

as i said, likely it is a coincident. and considering no work has been carried out, is likely to return at some point.

im sure one of the Spark Reps here will pop in and confirm for you they defiantly are not touching your DSL speeds, and that the CSRs were referring to the traffic management.

When your talking to Tier 1 support, this can happen sometimes..

Spark cant cut the physical link speed. I dont even think chorus have the ability to do that.

That horrid looking "patch panel" which looks like they have just stuffed some telco parts into a cabinet that was at some stage a switchboard is most likly where the problem is - you have many phone cables on what looks to be some krone terminals at the top and nothing else. No way to isolate all the unused runs in that cabinet or re-patch them to use them for something useful like ethernet.

Get a real home hub put in and then you can put a telco module in it which will have the DSL filter attached to it, and then you will be able to patch the jacks as required for ethernet.
