Hi, yes the 659 could be re deployed as a WAP, however its wireless performance is not that flash, that said, just disable the DHCP on the 659, allocate the lan IP address to one within your new network and connect to it via one of its LAN ports, nothing connects to it WAN.

As for the edge router, when configuring you configure one of the ethernet ports (typically eth0 but any will do) as the WAN and one as LAN, you could configure the remainder into a brdige switch and therefore treat them as a lan switch.

As for phone sockets, are you using those currently, if on Spark then I doubt it.

No at the moment I haven't turned off the copper landline but I want to. I thought that at that point we'd have to plug the base phone into one of the phone points on the HG659. So the phone plugs into the fibre box instead? (this is getting off topic, sorry!)

If your on spark, then the phone service is provided by the interface on the Chorus ONT, with other ISPs it can either bee the same or from an ATA on their router each ISP does it a bit different.

OK, I've opted to get an Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite. Will return here when it arrives, because I can see from the doco that it won't be a simple plug and play swap exercise :-)

So the EdgeRouter Lite has landed. Looks nice. But I see that it expects/needs to be addressed as 192.168.1.1 on initial setup. I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that. Is there another way?

I've attached a quick schematic of some of the network I have in place:

The HG659b isn't doing DHCP or DNS, isn't managing any private networks or doing any bridging or port forwarding, there might be some firewalling in there but I haven't done anything fancy that I can recall. It sucks that there's no way to save a backup of the Huawei's config in readable form, 'cos that would be useful.

DHCP is handled by the network manager (a NUC running Ubuntu 18). DNS for anything in the 172.16.9.x subnet is also handled by the NUC, which is also their internet gateway. DNS for the devices in the 192.168.0.x subnet is handled by Google, and the Huawei is their gateway.

I need the internet for work with minimal downtime, unfortunately, so always proceed hypercautiously...

I've read the Edgerouter X tutorial but fail at step 1 (refer above).

Edit: when I click on the thumbnail the image is displayed on a black background and the IP addresses disappear. To clarify, the network manager has addresses in both subnets: 172.16.9.1 and 192.168.0.1. So does the diskstation, which has 4 network ports. The LH laptops and server are in the 172.16.9 subnet and the RH ones, and all the media devices, are in the 192.168.0 subnet. The Huawei is 192.168.0.254.

Can you not just plug a laptop into the edge router and change it's management IP before you plug it into your network?

Just standard ethernet should do. You will have to set a static IP on your laptop in the same 192.168.1.x range if it doesn't have DHCP, thats all.

You're very wrong. Follow my guide, change the IP addressing during setup and ensure you also remove the HG659 from the mix (the Edgerouter can plug directly into the ONT via eth0).

Also I would look at replacing whatever your're using for WiFi with some Ubiquiti UniFi access points. Currently, your network is looking incredibly messy.

They're Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 wifi range extenders (EX7000) and they plug into the ethernet ports in the rooms they occupy and work just fine. How would UniFi improve things? Apart from the Huawei refusing to serve up the internet when we hit the device limit, the networks run smoothly, I've probably made it look messier than it really is.

So it really is as simple as (a) temporarily change the IP address of a laptop and connect it to the ERL (b) update the firmware (c) change the IP address of the ERL to 192.168.0.254 (d) disconnect from the laptop (e) revert the laptop back to its assigned IP and reconnect it (f) unplug the HG659b and plug in the ERL (g) take it from there... ?? (EDIT, sorry, that was a question!)

Is there anything squirrelled away in the HG659b config which is essential to note before I start, or will the ERL just figure it out from the Chrous box when I connect it up?
