One of these http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11314 is what a friend got and embedded in his car in a place that it will probably not be found, hooked up to the cars 12v and a small SLA battery to a 12v to 5v adapter - no idea on the runtime if the car battery is disconnected, but it got 4 weeks without depleating the car battery to the point of not starting when it was parked up at his parents place.

Anyway, they are sadly GSM only but with a bestmate prepay sim in it you can just text it and it will text back the GPS coordinates of it.

He was going to wire the mic up but I think we couldnt get it to answer calls when dialed, since it used getting a call as a way of making it text back the location.

Whilst technically possible to triangulate the approximate location of a CDMA handset, the accuracy is largely limited by how many network sites the handset can "see". The systems that perform this triangulation, originally developed by Bell Labs, are largely geared up for identifying problem locations with the network, rather than finding individual devices, although we have been able to assist with missing trampers, and similar, in the past.

FYI - 120 faults nor the prepaid help desk can locate destiination of cdma handset - only can tell you as much as what mobile exchange their in , in which their only 3 locations, auckland, wellington and christchurch.. best bet would be CIC (call investigation centre) but they wont help.. unfortunately! :)
