TechnoGuy001: If your on a "unlimited data plan" then it shouldn't matter if you host the picture here in NZ, should it? Or will it slow down the server...

I explained in the first page on this discussion the technical reasons on why we host images on a separate server to speed up loading.

As I said, 2 GB won't even start the day for Geekzone - we are currently the #20 New Zealand site in terms of unique users.

TechnoGuy001: And one last comment, in my eyes this site can do with a major rework of it's layout and make it more web 2.0. Is there any plans on this in the near future?

Yea I read that, I wouldn't of thought that there would be that many International people going on this site, but I wasn't saying that you would run this site on 2GB i was referring to the unlimited local traffic. But again the they provider would probably want you to go on a business plan if you where with them.

Congrats at being the #20 for unique users!

We have finished another round of optimisations - this time focus was on the SQL database. We have updated all the main tables and indexes for more efficient use of some data types. This should speed up the server time - not download times necessarily.

Our current hosting withg ICONZ is good. It provides some good support and is reliable. There are two reasons why we host images overseas:

1. We wanted a second server to allow for faster downloads. Your browser will be able to download images from our server in the U.S. while downloading CSS and other files from our local server.

2. The cost of a second server in New Zealand would be too high

Back in 2006 we had a DDoS and that cost us about $10,000 in a single month. We since have moved to a more affordable unlimited plan - but you can imagine the monthyl costs for this.

Google is usually really fast - I have no problems loading this on my TelstraClear connection or over CDMA Mobile Broadband.

I am on Vista Ultimate with Firefox, I just tried IE7 and it is much better...which is surprising

No, it is not surprising. Do you have any Firefox ad blocker? Those ad blocker software cause more trouble than help, really. They slow things down - a lot.

Number 2 makes sense. Number one is irrelevant, as one server can be made to look like more by a 30s configuration change in Apache. By default browsers will take two streams from a server but this is very easy to modify server side. Generally 4-5 streams at most is best.

I have just removed the Statcounter tracking script from all our pages. We have used Statcounter for long time but we can get the information from Google Analytics and a couple of server side scripts.

As it stands now we have the scripts for Google Analytics, Google Ad Manager and Nielsen//NetRatings. We also have the TinyMCE script loaded for the rich text editor.

So one less script - great stuff!

Can confirm that after AVG update the other day that added and AVG safe search addon to Firefox GZ ran like a dog, disabling safe search and restarting FF returned GZ to its normall snappy self.

Another update: today I have changed some of the antivirus settings in our web server. Although I don't like the idea of having this kind of software on a server, it's a needed beast.

I have excluded a couple of essential IIS configuration files from the scanning, so you will see it should be a bit faster now.
