MF, that is starting to sounds very 'House-like', either Lupus, Aplastic Anaemia or The Proxy Farm is almost always to blame.
Is there any emprical testing behind the proxy suggestion? Or are we falling back on anecdotal information here?

I'm glad you find time to make fun of paying customers... Reality is when you have connections working well over VPN or SSL and direct connections to sites fail, then we can only think there's something in the middle causing trouble.

We are all paying customers here Mauricio. I guess what I was asking (and in a somewhat sarcastic fasion, sorry) was, was there any comparison with non-proxiable connectivty done?
When I jumped on the net at approx 4pm, there were no browsing issues experienced. I guess that doesn't rule out a brain fart from one of the caches in the interim, but often a problem cache can make it's presence felt for more than a couple of hours.
Apologies if my manner irritated you, I guess I deserved a kick in the pants for that.

In the last couple of days I've noticed TelstraClear performance getting better and better in terms of transfer speeds from overseas hosts. But multiple times today, with different sites, I experienced my browser stop on "connecting to ..." and waiting seconds and seconds before it started doing something. This was on multiple computers inside the house and on different domains.

It's not speed, it's actually getting some content back.

I am not against proxies, because in the long term they improve speeds, but I'm against proxies that fail intermittently.

In addition to the previous reply, how do I know it's a proxy problem? My browsers show a connection reset error 101 - those are usually associated with Transparent Proxy services.

How is the latency looking on your BRAS?

Cable here in CHCH seems slow the last few nights, google search results not loading next page, lagging, dropped connections. Last night VOIP drop outs and general issues with connecting to sites.

Checked my router and there is no other traffic going on at the same time. Speed test to Auckland is 6mbps, usually about 15mbps.

Checked signal levels in the cable modem and they are the same as always, so no issue there.

Who are you using for VoIP? I'm not having any issue with that at all.

Facebook is fairly bad as well, but who knows if that's the ISP or FB?

iirc TCL have Google cache's in their network, since picking up thousands more customers, have they picked up more cache servers?

+1 this is exactly what I have been experiencing for some time now too. To add to that it is often (most often) on a site you are already on just a different page and if you stop and refresh the page it will load instantly. For me the Battlelog for Battlefield 3 is almost unusable. http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/ but that is just one that I am very aware of because I use it often. Many other sites have the same issues. Interestingly this morning it is performing perfectly.

Google is definitely the worst, now that they seem to use ajax to load the next page of results, it just greys out and sometimes doesn't come back.

Using 2talk for voice, but it was the wife having problems and she was calling her parents overseas, so it may have been a different issue.

Also using 2Talk on 100/10 cable now and not problems.

The BRAS is clearly congested and I've already had a whinge to Gary and been told that work is being done, so I'm very VERY sure that will come right.

Are you still on 15/2? I would upgrade to 100/10 if you can/will afford it. That will put you on the D3 network rather than D2, which has to be better for us all in the long run.

Thing about these flash AJAX applications is they push the work to my computer, which might or might not be up to the task depending on what else I'm doing at the time with it.

I am on DOCSIS3 and can tell you it's no better. When it gets to the proxy farm it makes no distinction.

AJAX is a standard HTTP request on port 80. It's intercepted by the proxy farm.

Just to check, do the comments above relate to ADSL Telstra connections as well? Lately, having recently switched from Vodafone which worked perfectly on the same internal wiring/modem etc, Telstra Clears ADSL offering has been near on unusable during peak periods, even for basic stuff like viewing stuff websites. Youtube for even small clips has been close to unusable. And to be fair, it's been like that on and off ever since we changed a few months ago....
