It really should say that the call cannot proceed because the caller id information is withheld and then just hang up, or direct the caller to contact their own telco for information on unblocking it. It also may indicate that their is a fault when its actually the callers decision to withhold their number that is resulting in the call failing to go thru.

Perhaps you could make it a user recorded file from the voicemail configuration instead of a fixed system message? I would put something on it about how its rude to call someone with your number hidden and I see no reason to take the call from someone that won't identify themselves.

Exactly, although some brain dead businesses have their numbers come thru withheld (westpac, genesis energy and baycorp) but it is still their choice to do that, so the loss of my custom is on their heads, not mine.

IMO there is no excuse for any business to be making calls without valid caller id, particularly ones making unsolicited outgoing sales calls, and if they were to then a sorbs for telemarketers could be made to deal to them ;)

Selective rejection would be great for stopping the 15-20 calls I have received recently from CID 90222 which is some indian call centre selling Slingshot.

Ah yes a much better suggestion than mine...  what I've found is that for whatever reason some people don't realise their number is being withheld (their other half who set the phone up asked for it) ... or they didn't realise that to ask for an unlisted number also perhaps meant their number was withheld ...

How about: "Hi there, you have a blocked number - please unblock it if you want to speak to me"

Although an interesting discussion by Grant is his blog ... maybe we just have to wait for the advanced features to personalise vfx to our hearts content....

Yea, lucky Grant!! Maybe I don't do enough calling to be privileged with the advance features yet. Ah well, I'll just need to suffer a few more coffees whilst I wait :(

you think baycorp have their number blocked by accident? they deliberately have it blocked, and if you don't answer the call they'll call back a couple of minutes later,
