Yeah. It is such a shame that in a place like NZ we still have those kinds of issues. Although my ceiling had just been re-insulated and new "power wiring" had been put in I was not made aware that probably phone line should also be changed as previous owner said that internet and phone services were working ok.

unfortunately, everyone's idea of a good line is different.

wiring in my flat was "perfect" "gives excellent speeds"... i move in, move my vdsl connection with me, to down the track find riptie wire (speaker wire) being used for the phone-line, of which it was ran through another property. clearly not optional by any respects for a VDSL connection.

ended up taking 4 weeks to have a proper vdsl installation done, inwhich the bad wiring was replaced (atlest on the dsl side)

the wonders of classic "shel be right" building in NZ, slap up a wire, phone works must be perfect!

I live 20m away from the cabinet but get huge interference from 3 500 pair cables feeding through the cabinet.

Hey, sorry I'm a little late to the party. But can I ask what kinds of connection speeds you get with those stats? Eg. speedtest.net kind of thing. I have the following:

which looks great....except I can't break 20Mbps down, and 2Mbps up (on speedtest). Is that normal?? So far all I've had from Vodafone is "speeds will fluctuate the first couple of weeks while they test different profiles etc." But mine haven't fluctuated at all...they're rock solid.

You're testing over WiFi right?

I don't understand why (and I can't be bothered figuring it out just yet) but wifi speed tests seem to stick around those speeds. Connect with ethernet and see if they change.

Thanks for the quick reply. Nah, it's actually the same whether I connect wired or wireless. Basically 19.5-19.8 down, 1.8-1.9 up

Maybe you're still connected to an ADSL profile on the ISP side even though you have a VDSL connection.

sounds possibly like a profile capping issue on vodafones side. your throughput shouldnt be that much lower than your sync rates.

on a ligher note, better line than TimA!

Well, just been in a somewhat tedious conversation with Vodafone support. Apparently from their side they can ping my router and get a download speed of about 49Mbps (sweet!). So the advice she kept trying to give me was "maybe check the speed capacity of your computer's network card". That's despite me explaining several times that I've tested on multiple computers, wired and wireless, and the speeds are identical. My network cards are all gigabit ones (are there any that aren't these days?).

Anyway, eventually I was put on hold again while she spoke to a technician. Long story short, it SOUNDS like you get artificially capped for 3 weeks while they test their profiles etc. And it's only then that your speeds will reflect the line speeds your router shows.

Which isn't quite what I'd understood when they said "your actual speeds will fluctuate for the first 5-9 days while we optimise the line". Hopefully that's right and I don't have to call again in a couple of weeks.

not enough details to be sure,

but it looks like your on a 17a sync, with 58mbit, your on the upper end of vdsl.

as for vodafone, sounds like they are pulling the sync rates, you need to make it clear to them your only seeing 20mbit of throughput despite the 58mbit sync. one of the vodafone folk around here will sort you out im sure, but to me, clearly reads like they have you locked into an adsl rate profile rather than vdsl on their side.

speedtests are also an effective way of showing this, to the CSR, last time i was on a vodafone line, they are very quick to want to remote in and run speedtests on your machine to check it out.

this is NOT your line training, given your line speed but a limitation elsewhere. assuming you are testing over hardwire, its also NOT your nic.
