I just had FibreX 200/20 installed this afternoon. So far not very impressed. When it's going it great, but I've had two outages so far already. Neither were fixed by device reboots.

Feels like dejavu from a year or so ago with my previous cable issues. I don't want to deal with this crap again (especially from the fallout form a highly connected family). If the outages continue I'll be requesting my old model and 130 pipe back. My fault for not doing some due diligence I guess.

I don't think that you can go back to 130/10Mbps - it was "grandfathered" last year. HFC 100/10 may still be available.

If by "model" you mean "modem", then you are probably out of luck there too. The excellent old Cisco cable modems are no longer issued.

I was on 50/2 cable in Chch until recently, with the end of the last 12 month contract approaching. We were going to stay on cable for various reasons (getting TV through cable, a family member is not yet fully dragged off an ISP-supplied email address, and cable reliability has been great for us) and we wanted somewhat faster upload, but without a hardware change if possible. Decided 100/10 instead of FibreX would be best if we could get it for a reasonable price.

First call through, ended up with sales. Their job description appeared to be strictly reading the website content to callers with no deviation from script. No luck.

Next call a few days later, asked for retention team. Much better experience. Got a bit of a discount, and now we are on 100/10 keeping the VF-supplied Cicso modem and our own router. No tech visit, no fuss. Maybe 200/20 FibreX would have still been a bit cheaper, but I preferred to stay with the proven reliability of our existing setup and we'd never notice the speed difference.

Ended up going this route also.

There was some initial resistence from customer support, but when they realised that my plan B was non-contract UFB with a different ISP things came together pretty quickly.

This was a good option for a bit more speed without the hassle of hardware upgrades etc.

Now to sort out UFB and voip at work...

Continued problems on FibreX 200/20 here in South Chch this afternoon/evening. Tried a static IP over last 2 days, this was routing my traffic via a Wellington server, probably worse than DHCP VLAN. Have been onto VF tech support and had static removed, not much better. Still Sluggish, slow web page loads, truly regretting moving from my Motorola and 100/10. The FibreX VLAN service certainly seems more congested and unresponsive. Will be going back to 100/10 and Motorola Bridge etc..... Bring on Real Fibre!

Yeh great choice you made UFB is seriously far better.

So:

1) If you can get UFB get this IMO.

2) I think the voda cable network will get better as they add capacity and people dump it for UFB, but if you can get UFB then do it hands down.

I am on "FibreX" 200/20Mbps in Wellington.

My connection is monitored by TrueNet, with multiple automated performance tests performed hourly, 24/7, 365/365.

Here are my downstream speeds from an ACSData server in Auckland, charted by Time of Day, for the past week:

This is a typical week for my connection, as monitored by TrueNet.

Note that my download speeds are typically well below 50Mbps during daylight hours, and they tend to get even worse during the 8pm to 9pm peak period.

This matches real-world performance, which is never remotely near 200 Mbps.

As all international traffic passes through Auckland, these are also the speeds that I get on international connections, if I am lucky.

You have been warned.

EDIT: Manual OOKLA speed tests give much better results than this, but do not match real-world performance.

So I got a flyer in the mail for FiberX 200/20-3 day install with a 12 month contract for $80per month. I live in Wellington, Mount Cook area with UFB but the Bodycorp have been stalling UFB install plans for over a year and I just resubmitted another order. I jhave ust moved from Spark ADSL to BigPipe VDSL for $90per month. To me its a no brainer to switch with FiberX for 12 months as I get better speed and save money or is there some other reason I should hang on to VDSL? I'm quite content with BigPipe VDSL but would rather save an extra $10, is it worth it?

No.

See above. You won't get better speed.

Stick with VDSL until you can get fibre.

For the first time posting on GZ, I myself are having issues with Fibre X 200/20. Since it was installed last year, it has been up in down in speed issues.

While watching Youtube or Netflix streams, the system starts to buffer, then stops with message saying no internet connected. It is like this for about 10 minutes, then comes back on. I have rung Vodafone Tech Ninja's multiple times, but they seem to be stumped in understanding why the connection stops, as they log into the Technicolour Modem and the Huawei router to find nothing.

To say this is Fustrating to myself is an understatement. Being based in the northwest of Christchurch, i see i'm not the only one in the city with this problem.

Where do you have your wifi modem and what electrical equipment is nearby?

Is your cordless phone 2.4ghz or 1.8ghz?

When you are using wifi on your phone, how many other wifi networks can you see ?

Hi Goosey, Linux. Firstly my apologies, i should have stated earlier. I am currently connected via Lan with cat5e ethernet connection, the Huawei router is right next to the laptop

I was just going to post that my 200/20 in ChCh had been ok for the past few days. Ironically I'm writing this from my mobile as the internet dropped out. When it's up, speed is good. It's the sudden drop outs with nothing for 10 or 15 mins that are grating. All the lights are on, just no one home.

I can't brain today. I have the dumb.

Update on my prev post re FibreX here in Chch....some weeks in since moving from my rock solid 100/10 service, so far continuing with a frustrating experience with 200/20 FibreX. Have Tried a static IP with no improvement and purchased a new router to change out the Huawei HG659 gateway.

I have invested in a new Netgear Router as my TP link will not readily run VLAN10 configuration either native or with DD WRT firmware. The new Netgear R7000 router fixes the 2.4Ghz flakey wifi issues, evident with the Huawei HG659 Voda unit, but did not fix the overall web page load performance. Also slower during peak traffic periods than the old 100/10 was.

Generally news (stuff and NZ Herald) and other websites take quite a number of seconds (5 or so secs) to fully load/render, I have tried configs with both Google DNS and VF DNS settings, having similiar outcome. I suspect the core issue is the VLAN deployment and maybe the Technicolour modem, with IP traffic being mixed with the other VF “DSL” network traffic/servers (ex IHUG). Previously we had the Cisco Docsis 3 modem/bridge with static IPs on my TP Link router…this delivered solid 100/10 with good web page loads. This was the ex TCL config with a speed upgrade, basically it just worked better.

I am close to reverting back to 100/10 and paying the $20 a month more in rental…this will keep my wife happy even if FTP traffic is a bit slower.

Fibre cannot come fast enough, but Enable are slow rolling this out in my area.
