But its not like uploading a 30 min 1080 clip over MBB is really cost effective ;)

how is it for reliability of the connection? Still having random pauses in thruput etc? thats something that speedtest doesnt report which is a shame, since then you could start the test, go for a hoon around the block/over the bridge etc and get results on the random pauses etc in it.

I've used my Samsung GS2 on the Vodafone NZ Network, at many locations around New Zealand for many months and I've never had any issues with "random pauses" at all.

My job involves me being connected to MBB throughout the working day & I travel around many towns & cities, whilst my device is tethered to my laptop.

As I said, I have not experienced any random pauses at all.

it is long since fixed.

No, just 5-10 second periods of no data thruput. Used to happen all the time on the southern motorway about greenlane/marketroad, and the bridge too.

Interesting thread title this one - the results I've got testing around Auckland and Hamilton with Telecom and Vodafone suggest that Telecom rocks in mobile broadband speed, not Vodafone (for reference I'm a Vodafone user, and likely to stay that way with my now ludicrously cheap legacy 3GB data pack). Now I know that this is partly because of the number of users you're sharing connection with on Vodafone relative to Telecom, but nevertheless the reality everywhere I tested is that Telecom absolutely hammered Vodafone - if a solid BB connection and the best speeds are vital to you then Telecom may well be the network for you (at least in the locations I tested). Here are the results:

I tested at home and reported those results earlier - 500K/s Telecom, 75K/s Vodafone - very impressive result for Telecom not the least of which because its connection at home is rock solid (the same cannot be said of Vodafone, whose coverage at my home is truly awful - in order to get 3G usually need to hold the phone in the right spot/pray etc).

I tested at work, in the concrete dungeon in the middle of the building that constitutes my room. I couldn't actually get a 3G connection for Vodafone at all, in fact I couldn't even reliably get a 2G connection, so I didn't bother with a speedtest at all. I did get this on Telecom:

I tried in my folks place in Rototuna just outside Hamilton, Vodafone the top score, Telecom the next two down:

I tried in other places too - Ponsonby, Pt Chev, Onehunga - results no where near as one-sided as the ones above, but still decisively in Telecom's favour. The only place I got one in Vodafone's favour was the Airport - Telecom clocked around 600K/s, whereas Vodafone monstered it at 800K/s.

Anyways, I thought it was interesting all round really. I'll be sticking with Vodafone for the reasons mentioned, all the while hoping they upgrade things significantly.

Oooh, and forgot to mention - home is in Mangere Bridge in Auckland (not far from where I got Vodafone's best speeds, oddly enough). Forgot I needed to mention that, about half a million people around the world know I live in Mangere Bridge from my youtube vids :)

In my experience (comparing the odd speedtest side by side with those who possess Telecom phones), the results are consistent with what you are describing. OTOH, to VF's credit mobile BB speeds have generally gone way up and, more importantly, I no longer routinely suffer from 10 to 20 seconds at a time of absolutely no data throughput when trying to check e-mails and various apps.

To be honest, I have no idea what most of the telcos are thinking when it comes to data allocation on plans. With the availability of "on air" updates on the Iphone and increasing use of smartphones as news/data consumption devices, 250 mb or thereabouts a month just require too much restriction on the part of users to make things work. I am pretty glad that I re-signed on the now grandfathered VF plans and have 3 gigs of data a month in addition to double minutes.
