jjnz1: 2Talk has an excellent set features like Remote dial tone, which you can use in conjunction with Vodafone's NZ Best Mate and an Android program like Prefixer.

This will allow you to make a dial plan on your android which specifies that all landline etc calls go through 2talk, making them free. Call quality is still perfect, and not subject to VOIP 3G errors because its a normal GSM call.

As far as I'm aware, no other NZ ITSP offer such services?

Xnet VFX has the same function. Look under Remote Office in the following document:

I have been with both VFX and 2talk and at the end of the day it came down to the hardware quality rather than support. I found that all the support in the world didn't fix crap hardware (which was VFX certified by the way).

Getting reliable hardware sorted out more of my issues than on-going support. Once I got 2talk setup I haven't needed their support. I can't recall the last time my 2talk connection went down.

Couldn't agree more, may I ask what hardware your using ATM??

I started off with a Linksys WRTP54g and went to a Linksys WRP400. I am now on using a Gigaset S685 IP. I reckon the WRTP had a dodgy power supply that used to spike and the same with the WRP. The WRP is still here using the voice section only for my house alarm. I never figured out which part of the WRP was dropping the connection (the router or the voice) but it appeared the voice section was at fault. I now use an ASUS RT-N16 router for the broadband (PPPOE wireless).

Ha yes, I have 2 WRP400 in my draw never quite managed to get them to work reliable.
They would for no reason start dropping packets which resulted in gaps in the voice.
I gave in the end with them I think they are flawed in design, ata on the wrong side of the nat.

Couldn't agree more, may I ask what hardware your using ATM?

I have been using a Linksys WRTP54G for over 4 years, but this week have replaced it with a Cisco SRP521W. Nothing else has changed, but we noticed a significant improvement in call quality. With the old Linksys router there were brief dropouts in outgoing voice every so often, lasting only a fraction of a second, but sufficient to cause the person at the other end to ask you to repeat numbers or names that were unfamiliar.

With the Cisco, the call quality is as good as a very good landline in an urban area, even though we are in quite a remote area.

All of the LAN ports on the Linksys had also ceased to function at 100Mbits/sec for some reason, but still worked at 10. With the Cisco, we are back at full speed, which is nice. Previously I had thought my PC was to blame, but it turned out to be the Linksys router.

Yes must give the cisco unit a go, Cisco know how to make routers.

Just have to put a vote in for italk, often overlooked for some reason. Running through my Vodafone router, with an analoge phone attached.

I've had no issues with quality or downtime so haven't had to experience the customer service side of it.

$11 for 500 minutes anywhere suits us, were the 2talk option has loads of local minutes but hardly any national.

Just coming back around to revive this topic as it's been quite a few years and the residential VOIP landscape has changed a bit.

Any current feedback and thoughts on the VOIP providers available today that are ISP agnostic? I'd like to have a VOIP provider that is not married to my broadband provider so I can change broadband without having to worry about moving/migrating my phone at the same time.

I know a lot of people mention 2Talk, but I need to port my phone number and when I look at their plans, it looks like I'd have to go with $35+gst per month to get the minimum service levels I require. Primarily, I'm looking for a low monthly line charge, local calling and then reasonable rates for the few times I need to call a mobile or international number. 99% of the usage is actually going to be for receiving inbound calls and making outbound local calls. And yes, I do need to keep my current phone number and port it over.

So I think 2Talk can do this right?

Then who else is a stable player in this market? I see World Xchange is doing this service and their plan and rates looks more suited to my needs.

Looks like they don't exist as a standalone and got merged into Voyager. I only see a Voyager Voice which is for business and includes/requires a deskphone rental? Do they support/allow BYOD options and offer a more residential plan?

Yep WxC is screwed now. Voyager I have a hard time recommending purely because of the large outages they have had recently, really nice features in Voyager though.

2talk is still best for residential - as long as you can set it up.

I've had my VFX service for ten years now. Very stable. I've shifted ISPs a couple of times, and even though I am with Vodafone (cable) at present, I'm not going to merge accounts because there is only $1/month saving, and it would be a hassle when I shift ISPs again. I have an SPA2102.

I would mention that my prepay mobile has slightly lower rates for national and cellular calling, however I still want a home line.

I've been with 2talk pretty much since the beginning (italk before that), and have been disappointed to see prices have been relatively static while mobile rates have fallen. Hero isn't a great deal (it's $1 cheaper than the legacy 2talk plan I'm on when a second number is added - 2talk had two as standard), but it adds mobile calling to the bundled minutes, which I think are worth having. There is no mention of local calls which are free on 2talk. I guess I'll sign up for the one month trial and find out.

I signed up for a trial. There are clearly a few rough edges, but they have indicated that updates are coming in the next few days and they are eager to get feedback from users.

Unfortunately, local calling is not free. Apparently this is due to the way carrier interconnects are done these days, but it's also a significant limitation compared to 2talk, which does include local minutes. The only real benefit to switching would be the ability to call NZ and Australian mobiles in the included minutes, but I already have more of those than I need with my mobile provider (and they roll over). So, sadly, it doesn't look like I'll be moving, but it's good to see some long overdue movement in this market.

Well World Xchange is out. They are not keeping their website up-to-date. They won't offer SIP number unless you do a full broadband package with them.
