If it was working ok with the onboard sound, it is worth investigating further.

Have a look in device manager and see if any of the drivers are marked as '!'.

If so, remove them from there with a right-click, and restart.

If no joy, give windowsupdate.com a go from your browser and see if it offers sound drivers in the hardware category.

Doesn't sound like a driver problem, but let's try to eliminate that.

It doesn't sound (pun) like a driver issue, but I still think it could be related to the sampling rates. I've had this problem a couple of times and I have fixed it by locking the sound card down to a certain sampling rate.

I honestly can't remember where such a setting would be in Windows XP, as it's been so long since I've used it, but it should be somewhere in the sound menu in the control panel. It's called "Supported Formats" on Windows 7.

What type of jitter/stuttering is it?
Is it of constant frequency/intervals, or is it completely random? i.e. the music will play fine for a few seconds and they suddenly start stuttering, or is it a stuttering with a constancy?

tdgeek. I managed to increase swap file, seems a little better while playing music through VLC. Still got the stutter. I increased virtual ram to stay at 512mb. I could buy a stick of ram but i only do casual work and managed to spend my money. I'm only 16 haha. I'll look into buying a 512mb stick .I found one for $20 buy now. I will probably buy that if ram is my issue here and see what happens.

gzt i will try windows update as device manager does not have any (!'s) there. Hopefully wont be too long. If it doesn't suggest anything i will try tdgeeks driver he has posted. Hold up again.

Scratch the little bit better as well. It will stutter at random. The music could start even and 5 seconds later it stutters and the rest of the music is fine. or it could do it randomly again. I will take a look with the sampling rates. And will post and ask before i do anything. Although it seems harmless.

Just before i go to windows update... dontpanic42, could it be Hardware acceleration or Sample rate conversion quality? The only two i found with the pc speaker settings. Nothing on the driver program.

If it's not consistently stuttering, then it probably isn't a sample rate conversion issue.

Have you tried doing what tdgeek suggested; deleting the swap file, restarting, defrag, and then adding the swap file back?
To add to that, when you do delete the swap file, and subsequently re-add it, try adding it as a fixed size by choosing custom and then setting the initial size, and maximum size both at, say, 1536MB. That way Windows won't try and dynamically resize the swap file constantly. If it turns out to be too little swap file (e.g. if you are getting 'Out of Virtual Memory' warnings) then just repeat the process again and increase the fixed swap file size.
It's worth a shot.

It is in a .ZIP file. How do i install this? Not quite sure on how to do it. Windows doesn't tell me it is running out of virtual memory at all. Only if there are heaps of apps going at one time. And i never do that. I did increase swap file. But didn't delete it. How do i delete it?

Zip file: Extract all the files from the zip file and then take note of where you have extracted the too.
Go into the device manager in the control panel and find the sound card in question. Right click on it and select update device driver. From there, there should be an option to manually find the device drivers. Navigate to the folder that you extracted the files too, and select it. It should find the appropriate drivers and install them.

Swap file: Go into control panel and click on system. In system properties, navigate to the advanced tab, and then perfomance --> settings. Within the performance options sub window go to the advanced tab and click on the change button in virtual memory.

To delete the swap file, all you need to do is disable it by selecting 'No paging file', clicking 'set', and then restarting. Restarting will delete it.
Once you have restarted, to enable the swap file again, go into the same settings area and enable it again using the custom option, and setting it to a fixed size.

Double click zip file to extract it to a folder.

In the URL I gave it shows how to resize it, and there is an option to remove the swapfile. As I mentioned briefly and dontpanic42 expanded upon, if you remove the swapfile and reboot, you will have no swapfile. You then defrag. Then, you create the fixed swapfile. This is to put the swapfile as one contiguous, unfragmented file. It wont defrag under later standard defrags. As long as you create it as one size, it will stay that way. An auto swapfile will grow and shrink, and be defragmented. This process is to reduce hard disk activity. When your HDD is trying to play music, you don't want the drive head moving back and forth, you want it to play the track with no interruption. Faster systems and faster hard drives deal with that, but you are I feel asking too much of the memory/hard disk, hence this suggestion.
