It may be a compatibility issue, so try not to use the same audio chipset if possible, or failing that just make sure u can exchange it again.

You need to tweak the master PCI latency in BIOS if that setting is supported, or if not then the OS:

There may be other relevant bus settings as well. Can you report what you have available in your bios?

I'll have a closer look later.

I'm guessing because he wants 5.1 output.

The Realtek AC'97 ALC201 chip integrated on the motherboard only provides stereo output.

Makes Sense, but what are the chances a computer that power can do anything with 5.1 audio? Surely most sources he will listen to will only be 2 channel anyway?
His DVD drive does not go, he has no room on his HDD for any downloads with 5.1.

You suggest that he is downloading material with 5.1 audio on it.
Just remember that most, if not all, films on DVD come with 5.1 DD/DTS sound. I assume he is just wanting to get the best out of his Logitech Z-5300 5.1 setup.

Each to their own, and if I had a shiny set of Logitech 5.1 speakers, I'd want them all powered up too.

Indeed, you have a valid point. My bad, I forgot that he his optical drive doesn't work.

And the Logitech Z-5300 also turns 2 channel stereo into simulated 5.1 using the matrix mode. So maybe there really is no need for an extra sound card?

JarrodT: What content are you trying to play? Do you have any native 5.1 content, or are you just aiming to have the immersive sound of 5.1, because your Logitech speakers already appear capable of doing that from a 2 channel source.

I got a new stick of ram today a 512mb. No success with the stuttering. I brought it for gaming mainly and to get the best out of my surround sound. I used the matrix mode a few times and compared it to the 5.1 sound card, i really didn't like it. I wanted everything to be evenly spread throughout the speakers etc. Especially when gaming. Not new games either. Mainly older ones that my system can handle. I still need to defragment as well. Well finish de-fragmenting. I will use the tool suggested above as well. One of the guys said at the pc shop i went to, Said that they have sold many of the same products and not one of them has been returned because of the stuttering. Actually he hasn't ever had one returned because of stuttering etc. Also how do i change PCI latency? Should i put it to a higher number when i know how to do it as suggested? And should i try the ASIO drivers? If so how do i use them alongside my sound card? Thanks again guys. Maybe i should try a clean install and see what that does? But i fear i will have the same problem again.

Agreed, but he is only 16 and doesn't have the cash

I'd focus on changing the soundcard. Thats a 10 minute change and from what has been recently said, it will likely resolve the issue.

Hi, here is the screenshot. (First timer) Hope it works. It only says one where i have two slots there, one a dial up and the sound card. No ProSavage. That is my video driver. I think. I'm pretty sure it is. And that is onboard. But i may have fixed the issue here. I had turned down the volume on the console and windows volume and there is no stuttering at all. I've been playing music for a good hour and no stuttering. Maybe that fixed it? What would be the cause of that??

Ok. That program has not been updated for a while and is probably not showing the correct information. Not sure what to recommend as a replacement.

Good it is working for you now. What do you mean by volume on the 'console'?
