i say go with a mac, just give it time to learn the differences.

they are a bit more expensive, but you get a great deal more, great design, long lasting battery, good hardware.

software is also a lot cheaper (compare iwork to office, win7 to snow leopard). there isnt as much free software for it, since there aren't as many developers for mac, but most software i had to buy for it (programming, blogging, remote buddy) have been about $40sh on average.

the trackpad itself is reason to buy a macbook. will make you a lot more productive.

Sad to say but i agree. having switched a year ago.

If you can afford a mac, get it. If you cant then get a pc.

i went back after my first 13" macbook. i found the screen just too small. but i wouldnt go back after my 15" macbook pro. well i wouldnt go back to windows 7, windows 8 and a really good laptop could change everything (but i doubt it).

Say NO now before TOO LATE....I did say YES...and now iHave..iPad..iPhone...Macbook...macbook pro also you will feel alway wanted to upgrade when a new model come out....even you seam to unable to afford it..(like me..).I am broke because of Apple

I've been told (on multiple occasions) I have enough Apple products and accessories to start my own Apple store :) At least i do not have teh wifey to worry about. And if I did, she would not be a windows user.

Make a list of the 10 programs that you most use on a regular basis. If there isn't a mac version of each one don't bother.

As a linux user, I still have windows for this reason....I know there is a lot more mac SW but still the issue is the same. I love linux and wine is good but....

I have found that there is nothing more frustrating then going from my fave linux DE (changes from time to time) back to windows because of one or two bits of SW that just wont work under linux or wine. I use virtual machines, to get around the problem without having to dual boot.

The windows DE is fine until you use Gnome / KDE and find all the little things you can tweak to make it more productive (I understand this is possible in OSX) then you find that windows require either a plugin or just can't do it.

Another question to ask: is that program the best way of completing your workflow? Or is there an alternative that is more efficient given the learning curve?

I know what you are saying here, this is why I'm down to only a few programs.
Most of the things that I do there are FOSS alternatives, but there are just some that
there isn't an alternative for there are about 5 programs that have no version available for
non-windows OS's.

Hi,

Got my 1st Macbook back in 2006 and my girl got a Dell Laptop at the same time with same amount of money(of course the Dell spec is better than macbook) Over the years, I've upgrade from 10.4 > 10.5 then now 10.6. The machine is still reliable. Although it was a bit slow on 10.6, I still plan to keep that for 2 more year.

On the other hand, the Dell crashed more than 30 times, sent back to Dell for 3 times. The OS start from Vista and forced back to XP(after many many system restore later). It was completely dead after 3 years.

When you switch to Mac, you did paid more for the hardware but the OSX and the whole experience is just better. I honestly don't want to go back to PC

The feature and usability parity between Windows 7 and Mac OS X means you can't really go too wrong with either nowadays. Choose based on what applications you're thinking of using (if there are any in particular that require one platform over the other, and remember, apps like the MS Office Suite are well supported on both now since Office 2010 on Windows and Office 2011 on Mac), what you can afford and your preference in terms of design and choice of hardware -- because with Mac, you've really only got one supplier to choose from (Apple). Don't let it be about OS religion.

The question you really have to ask yourself is why are you looking at a Mac in the first place. When you purchase a Mac, if you're primarily going to run Windows on it then you're wasting your money and time so you're better off getting a Sony Vaio or something nice like that. Now if you're purchasing it because you like Mac OS X then you have to ask yourself whether the premium you're paying is equal to the satisfaction you get out of Mac OS X over using Windows.

For me, the big deciding factor is running Mac OS X hence its a matter of choosing which model rather than whether I should purchase one at all. Add on top of that iWork, iLife, an Airport base station, the ease of use, the crapware free computers, the affordable operating system upgrades, the balance between being able to geek out on the UNIX side and yet come back and use big name mainstream titles such as Creative Suite, hence I've settled on an iMac and a MacBook Pro.

From this discussion, it sounds like there are a lot of PC laptops out there that could be revived as Hackintoshes!

Best of both worlds really:

The PC techs get a project - they can happily spend the hours/days it takes to get OSX to work.

Their family/friends get a very usable computer (although be careful with Software Update)

People who weren't going to buy a Mac get to experience OSX and make up their mind.

Keeps the PC laptops out the landfill (for a few more years).
