Never won a cent, nor a free ticket online so went back to buying in store.

Have had some wins including strike 3 this weekend :)

There are a lot of people in this thread that appear to struggle with the concept of random selection.

Or ordering Lotto on line doesn't work for them.

I don't know the statistics of it but I won nothing ordering lotto online, I went back to getting it with my shopping and have won more since, it works for me.

I'd be interested to see what the stats are for online ticket sales/wins vs physical outlet sales/wins - is there a statistical difference? Sure, in theory, both are 'random', but I wonder how random the numbers generated are. Do they use the same generation algorithm for online tickets as for physical retail tickets? Is there a statistically significant difference in the number of times each number, and combination of numbers, is generated in the two mediums? There probably isn't, I am just surprised. Lots of Lotto outlets tend to (or used to, at least) make it clear if a high value prize-winning ticket was sold there, yet his isn't obvious online, so perhaps this difference contributes to the idea that online is less likely to win. Personally, I've never seen anything that indicates that, say, a first division win was an online ticket, but I've also not seen anything to indicate it isn't.

I went from winning nothing from the shop to winning nothing online. Self selected numbers, so, online / off-line is irrelevant (not that it wouldn't be anyway).

One advantage it does have though is the ability to put the purchase on the credit card. We don't pay anything extra to use the credit card, but, we do get rewards through using it and have an interest free period so it works better for us.

Looking at their system, it appears that you could use it to obtain free cash advances from your credit card marked as purchases, however, once you've done that a few times I'm sure they would notice it (or at least I'd hope they would have systems in place that would report on this).

I would imagine the vast majority of Lotto tickets are still bought at the local Lotto outlet, therefore...

According to mylotto.co.nz, on 26 January 2013"Biggest prize won on NZ Lotteries' online channel, MyLotto.co.nz, by family from Hokitika - a $15,769,230 Lotto Powerball prize." So I guess some people are able to make the online channel work for them. I'd love to know how!

One way to win a large amount, rather than share 1st division with others, is not to choose numbers that other people choose. eg If you select 1,2,3,4,5,6 , then you are not going to get a large amount if you do happen to win first division, as many people will have those same numbers. Same with using birthdays etc in the numbers.

How upset would you be to be one of the other 1st division winners in the draw talked about in this article?

Win 1st division lotto, and only get $76,923.

Sure - it's better than not winning if you think about it logically, but, I'd still be annoyed.

Mrs Spiker won division 3 & 4 prizes on the same ticket week before last, around $630. She buys them on her phone every now & again & has had several minor wins.

In a store: can't use credit card, but can check your ticket whenever you like.
Online: can use a credit card, but can't check your ticket whenever you like, unless you take a screengrab :p.

I figure the odds of winning are so low that there's not much point in buying more than the minimum. So every four weeks I load $10 onto MyLotto & buy 4 lines of regular lotto @ 60 cents a line. Powerball ~doubles the price, for a 1 in 10 chance of multiplying your win. Nice to dream about, but even less likely than getting all 6 numbers. Sometimes I also spread some money around keno & bullseye. Never Big Wednesday, it's too expensive for the potential payoff.

I've never won anything worth withdrawing, but never did with paper either. And, as you can see, my participation rate is pretty damn low.

Oncop53: Sure a few small prizes, $70 a few weeks ago.
But what really bugs me is the time restriction. Why cant I buy a ticket, or even check my ticket late at night?

I tried to find a justification in the enabling legislation... but there isn't one.  It just seems like they want to be a pain in the rear.

Edit: According to the History page, the first "big win" on MyLotto was... um, January 2013.  Not exactly a glowing statistic.

The online random number generator is broken. Two weeks ago I was letting it pick the numbers for a power ball ticket, and 4 lines in a row it picked the same four numbers out of six, and all in the same position in each line, positions 2,3, 4, and 5. None of those numbers were drawn.

heh yeah found the same thing, so I just keep using my own saved numbers

as for wins, i keep getting bonus tickets, have only had one or maybe two wins

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

I've played online for about 5 months, and won a few times.

I used to use one of those programmes that keeps a running history of the numbers selected to so call increase the odds on new tickets. The first two weeks I won both weeks with about $20 worth of tickets but that was off-line so to speak. Since then I haven't used it.

But being a geek, I do have an algorithm that looks like a pretty colourful twister game mat where I put certain picked numbers in the same coloured spots on different lines. Has it worked, yep first few weeks online and nothing since but I can't be bothered changing the numbers anymore, I just have my $2.40 favourite ticket over multiple weeks because the odds are about 6 billion to one, so cheapest will be just as effective.

After reading this thread yesterday and then watching The Office (US) last night where the entire warehouse staff won the lottery, I was sure it was an omen for me winning something in Lotto this past weekend. So I checked my ticket from Saturday after watching The Office and BINGO! $26 thank you very much :-).

I've purchased my tickets online for the past few years, always buying 10 weeks of $12 powerball tickets each time, and absorb any winnings into the next 10 weeks worth of purchases. When I first stated out, I won nothing. But recently I've started winning a few prizes in the bottom two divisions plus a powerball win. I won enough money in my last set of 10 weeks worth of tickets to purchase the current set and have a balance left over. So far I've won twice this set of 10 and have just over half of the funds for the next 10 weeks. It's getting better....
