bazzer: There are a lot of people in this thread that appear to struggle with the concept of random selection.
the plural of anecdote is not data.
Inphinity: I'd be interested to see what the stats are for online ticket sales/wins vs physical outlet sales/wins - is there a statistical difference? Sure, in theory, both are 'random', but I wonder how random the numbers generated are. Do they use the same generation algorithm for online tickets as for physical retail tickets? Is there a statistically significant difference in the number of times each number, and combination of numbers, is generated in the two mediums? There probably isn't, I am just surprised. Lots of Lotto outlets tend to (or used to, at least) make it clear if a high value prize-winning ticket was sold there, yet his isn't obvious online, so perhaps this difference contributes to the idea that online is less likely to win. Personally, I've never seen anything that indicates that, say, a first division win was an online ticket, but I've also not seen anything to indicate it isn't.

I would imagine the vast majority of Lotto tickets are still bought at the local Lotto outlet, therefore...
According to mylotto.co.nz, on 26 January 2013"Biggest prize won on NZ Lotteries' online channel, MyLotto.co.nz, by family from Hokitika - a $15,769,230 Lotto Powerball prize." So I guess some people are able to make the online channel work for them. I'd love to know how!
mattwnz:
One way to win a large amount, rather than share 1st division with others, is not to choose numbers that other people choose. eg If you select 1,2,3,4,5,6 , then you are not going to get a large amount if you do happen to win first division, as many people will have those same numbers. Same with using birthdays etc in the numbers.

How upset would you be to be one of the other 1st division winners in the draw talked about in this article?
Win 1st division lotto, and only get $76,923.
Sure - it's better than not winning if you think about it logically, but, I'd still be annoyed.
MaxLV:heh yeah found the same thing, so I just keep using my own saved numbersKyanar:Oncop53: Sure a few small prizes, $70 a few weeks ago.
But what really bugs me is the time restriction. Why cant I buy a ticket, or even check my ticket late at night?
I tried to find a justification in the enabling legislation... but there isn't one. It just seems like they want to be a pain in the rear.
Edit: According to the History page, the first "big win" on MyLotto was... um, January 2013. Not exactly a glowing statistic.
The online random number generator is broken. Two weeks ago I was letting it pick the numbers for a power ball ticket, and 4 lines in a row it picked the same four numbers out of six, and all in the same position in each line, positions 2,3, 4, and 5. None of those numbers were drawn.
