This bag lasted 7 years of everyday usage during primary school for me. Has a laptop sleeve. Purple colour is on-sale for $75 (but I wouldn't expect him to like it), although other colours are $110 on Kathmandu's Members programme.

95% of the students at my school have this https://www.macpac.co.nz/equipment/packs-bags/everyday-backpacks/macpac-litealp-23l-aztec-backpack/114048-BLK00-ST.html and they all carry a macbook in it plus books.  It is a High school, our Junior school have their own branded bags.

Comes in just under your $100 budget

Never seen anyone at my school wear that bag?

One of the issues is how small my Son is. The backpacks we have in the house are huge on him and everything I can find online that looks suitable, also looks like it would be hanging below his backside.

I guess we might just have to go to a few shops and try some.

To refer back to my earlier post - https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=48&topicid=249371&page_no=1#2232768

Packs with an adjustable harness are more suitable to fit a child over a period of time, given it can be adjusted as they grow.

And, yep, I'd not buy a pack for my child (or myself) without trying it on - recommendations are a good start, but are just that.

I got my daughter one of these and it's good - https://www.macpac.co.nz/equipment/packs-bags/everyday-backpacks/macpac-atlas-24l-aztec-backpack/114059.html?cgid=equipment-packs_bags-everyday_backpacks#sz=12&start=9

I think on sale it was around $130. I'd spend a bit more to get something decent.

As it turns out, I had a backpack from MateIn that I bought from Amazon when I was looking for a Backpack for myself a few months ago. It was one of the top rated bags and whilst it was a bit small for me, is perfect for my Son. Looks smart, has all the features, is light and well constructed. Cost $23 USD and $8 in shipping.

Thanks for the suggestions!

For anybody else looking Briscoes has 30 percent off and they have a good range of tech friendly back packs with iPad and laptop slots in various styles, sizes and configurations. I think the most expensive with the sale price was $90.

There were a few there I really liked and they seem well made. The brand is High Sierra and with the discount not much more expensive than amazon would be. If you want an Access model be aware there are two... one with diamond rip stop and one with the other kind and they are very slightly different. Both are the model 1, not the newer model 2 Access. I think one is the American market version as one uses cm, the other inches.

On Briscoes' web site the Access is the one without the model name specified. I liked the Academic model as a daily tote, would have liked to have seen the Audrey but local shop had none, bought the Access because I need some room for clothes to take it on a trip.
