Ohh and I forgot, she has bigger salary then Jorma Ollila, CEO of Nokia had last year, who had "only" 2.6million NZD. And Jorma was leading a company with 60.000 employees world wide..

juha: Wellie is a seedy little town with horrendous weather and littered with politicians. ChCh seems boring and staid as well, but instead of politicians, you get skinheads roaming the streets. And it's cold. Both towns have a massive Auckland complex, which only adds to their unattractiveness.

Well, I can't really comment on the abundence of politicians, but the weathers not really that bad. We get some bad weather from time to time, but otherwise it's not really that bad. I moved down from Whangarei originally and for the first 2 years I was down here I didnt' notice a difference.. admittedly we apparently had 2 of the mildest winters in years, so *shrug*.

Interesting about Telecom CEO -- I didn't know she was a woman. That's interesting; NZ's two biggest entities are takling each other head on, and they're both headed by women. I guess we're a pretty pro-equality country now eh! It's almost like teenage-catfight over the cute guy -- except there's billions of dollars at stake -- and there's not really any cute guy.

2 million a year,. Wow. That's like $1000 an hour for a 40 hour week isn't it? I wonder if she works 40 times harder than her tech support staff that get paid less $25 an hour (I assume).

Juha, good call on the accounting advice. I just don't kow here to start. I think a friend of mine studied to be an account and then decided to get a job he'd enjoy. Now he spends NZ summer in Tahoe and Austria, snowboarding, and his NZ winter in NZ; guess what, Snowboarding! He makes his income in the evenings weekends and off-season selling snowboard gear on ebay and trademe! Any, my point was gonna be that I'll see if he can provide me with some starting points.

Going OT (which is ok because this is the OT forum), what principle is this that says it is ok to pay for the software of one company (Adobe) but not pay for software of another company (Microsoft)? Isn't the software performing the actions it should? Is the work of people involved in its development any less valuiable than the work of people involved in another one's development?

I assume 'OT' is 'open talk'? I don't have a problem with Microsoft software. In fact I think some of it is actually very good, and the best in it's category, like the Office Suite for example. MS also makes a considerable amount of software that I don't think is very good, for reasons such as security issues, lack of, or bad foresight in planning, customizability, opinion. Some software I don't think is very good: most Windows versions, IE, Outlook Express, WMP, most proprietary MS document formats.

Yes, software, and work put into it, is valued differently, as I'm sure you know, according to demand, production costs, user base, market dominance, licensing, and many other factors.

About my principle; (I should have known better thant to bring that up here, but I've started it now! :( he he!); My basic principle when it comes to paying for music and software alike, is to reward creators/producers/manufacturers that have made a distinguishable and creditable product that I value.

I will happily pay full retail price for any music from Tool, that make intelligent and entertaining music that I will appreciate and value for many years to come. Although I'd prefer to send them my $30 directly, than let a record company and store take 90% of my/their $30. I wouldn't pay much for some music that I don't appreciate and don't value -- and rarely/never listen to.

I happily make donations to several open-source software projects that I feel need the funds and support, and have provided me with a useful quality product. In some cases I expect my clients to make donations to open source communities if they are using their software (or I am using it on their behalf). I sometimes make the donation myself from my clients fees and send them the reciept and explain the process to them. In some cases I prefer to contribute to the project with my time instead of money.

In the case of Adobe. I'd love to be able to afford their software and pay what it's worth. It's excellent software and has no counterpart that is as powerful or professional -- especially Adobe Illustrator (Freehand and Corel come close mind you). Admitedly their software is not perfect, but then is any software perfect? No, not MS, Adobe, Proprietary, Open Source, or any other. However at this moment I'm not earning/charging enough from my clients to justify those kind of costs -- which is something I'm not very good at, but I'm constantly working on it.

In the case of Microsoft, I don't agree with many inethical and anti-competitive business moves made/attempted by Microsoft. For that alone I I avoid using (and consequently paying) for MS products wherever I can, regardless of the quality of the software. I would prefer to never need to boot into windows, but unfortunately many software manufacturers haven't realized the importance of multiplatform software, let alone standards for that matter.

And an "ASP port of phpBB"? Really, interesting concept, as it sounds as phpBB would be the only forum software, and everything else would be a copy?

I thought I had seen such a port on sourceforge once. I never looked at it in detail, so maybe I assumed the porting part of that. It may have been this project which I saw: aspBB

I also thought it may have been a port of phpbb because the buttons here are the same/similar to phpBB's. Also the general layout and feature set seems very similar. Although that layout and feature set is pretty standard throughout most forum softwares.

phpBB is certainly not the only forum software available. However it is/was one of the most popular. There are many available, and I think several that are better than phpBB, such as SMF.

Yes it is a catfight. I think Helen is jealous of Theresa's salary.. :) I would be jealous in her case too..
Telecom as a biggest entity..well one of them. What about Fonterra? Big enough.

I was born & bred in Christchurch and as they say you: can take the man out of Christchurch but you can't take the Christchurch out of the man! Might be the whole one-eyed Cantabrian thing... (have I mentioned the Crusaders yet?) *hehe*

I now live again in Auckland after spending time away in Sydney & London. It was quite nice being a Cantabrian in both cities as there's always another Kiwi you can grate by yelling C-A-A-N-T-E-R-R-B-U-R-Y! I have to say that I can only achieve my fairly generous salary in Auckland due to the line of business I'm in, hence my reason for staying put. I was one of the Auckland bashers until I was posted here (under duress) during my 10 year career in the RNZAF. I ended up enjoying the place. Just takes a little getting used to. Much the same as going to much larger cities such as Sydney & London really. I also enjoy going back to smaller cities such as Wellington, Dunedin & Christchurch (and Edinburgh) - they have a different vibe!

Way off topic - but hey: Go the Crusaders!

Jama: I hate to sound negative but you need to be aware of the fact that 80% of NZ'ers earn less than $40K p/year. Obviously you have skills and will earn more than that but by how much I am not sure.
