Since you originally got 50Mbps, your internal cabling should be at least Cat5e which is alright.
When you did your DIY, did you do a tap off (i.e. daisy chaining) out of the cable? The fall in speed may be due to either untwisting of copper pairs or adding a multiple in the home wiring.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm discounting internal wiring issues now given that I'm still getting unacceptably high noise after connecting at the entry point into the house.

coffeebaron: Why did you not leave modem where it was and wire in the VoIP port to a secondary jack-point?
You could still do that by putting a new triple outlet in the cupboard: 1) the VDSL splitter connects to the first jack, 2) Ethernet connects on the second jack to an Ethernet (Cat5e) cable going to where they installed the current DSL outlet, and 3) internal phone network connects on the 3rd jack to take the modem's VoIP output. The only limitation with this setup would be that your modem requires a good power supply, and I suggest connecting it to a small (eg 300VA would be heaps) UPS or at least a good surge protector.




Time to find a new industry!

Are you connecting the VoIP and ethernet through the same UTP cable? There may potentially be crosstalk in this setup.
You can try to use a separate cable for ethernet and VoIP.

So two and a half months later and it looks like we finally have a resolution. It came to a head last night when our connection started dropping out several times an hour. It looks like this was finally enough for Chorus to actually do something. Latest stats as follows.

sounds more like the disconnects caused a DLM profile move.

Still battling along with the vendor and Chorus.

How would a too aggressive DLM result in the increased noise I'm seeing? I don't understand why whatever they did would have resulted in a drop to 12db along with whatever happened next throwing me back up to 26db.

Next update. Chorus just left and I'm now getting 12db at the point of entry with 14.6db at the jack point. Download on speedtest is currently hitting 35MB. There were issues at the point of entry with a broken anchor cable. The cable had gone slack and everything was sitting outside of the enclosure. The other issue was at the other end of the same cable with a rusted terminal. I suspect that the former was due to recent storms while the rusted terminal at the other end was the cause of the ongoing issues over the last six odd months.

If I can keep 35MB down I'll be very happy.
