Loujiggy: Thanks again everyone for all your help.

Will be moving to Whitby (Discovery drive, area) so not sure if that's an older or newer area... seeing as we have been in Johnsonville since we arrived in NZ 6 months ago, still not sure of the areas.

When I put the address in the Orcon website, they said they could do fibre. I am just looking now at the other providers you have mentioned too.

first year rollout, go for fiber forsure!

If fibre is available, then you won't be able to get VDSL installed.

although when i move to fiber, ild personally still wanna have a vdsl line, just to play with... cant tinker as much on fiber!

Fibre is better in every way as a broadband technology. If you can get fibre, you should do it.

However, depending on where you live it can be freakin nightmare to get it installed

FYI, I have two teenage daughters (and their visiting friends) who are constantly streaming and downloading. I mean constantly. Both my husband and myself game and if we watch anything, it's probably streamed. We do just fine with our 400GB cap - in fact, I don't think we've ever exceeded 300GB, so your point is invalid. With the discounts we offer for On Account mobiles (which she already pointed out she has with us) our offerings would more than satisfy Louise's requirements and still come out cheaper than the competition. Just saying.

...until the month when your kids leave their computer seeding a bunch of torrents on a 10Mbps+ upload on their computer and you use TBs of data
Or maybe they use youtube as a way to listen to music and decide to stream a music video playlist on loop in HD and just switch their monitor off when they go to school, leaving it streaming for 8 hours a day, every day at 5Mbps.

That kind of situation is very common with teenagers, and can sting you, the billpayer, for hundred, if not thousands of dollars of overage charges without you realising.

(To the OP, VF charge $1 per extra GB, with no option to add better value packs if you hit your cap early in the month, so if that happens to you, watch out! )

This is especially so with the faster speeds now available on VDSL, UFB, Cable. Things like youtube will now default to HD instead of SD, for example, so you won't even realise how much extra data you will use.

(question: why are you on a 400GB cap. 200GB with double data? That's a legacy plan and is probably more expensive than the current 500GB plan VF offer - maybe you should switch?)

I agree with you too! I'm a teenager myself, my two siblings and I are constantly streaming, torrenting, downloading, and browsing. We have 150GB with Vodafone, yet again our line speed is only 5Mbps, so a Fibre connection may mean more usage, but we never really go past 100GB.

Paying a once-off fee for a (hypothetical) overage of a few GB's is still better than paying more than $30 a month extra for something you don't normally need. With your example, you're paying that extra as 'insurance'. Okay I guess if it gives you peace of mind, but in my opinion, I would rather take my chances and pay (exponentially) less every month. Besides, my daughters don't use torrents because they know the majority of the content is illegal. I suppose it depends on how much you trust your kids and mine haven't given me reason not to thus far.

I am on an old legacy plan and haven't bothered changing it because it won't impact how much I pay per month and like I said we haven't exceeded our usage yet so just couldn't be stuffed, really. :P

they too,are on the 150GB vodafone plan, on a 1.7mbit adsl connection. breaking the 150G limit often mainly in the first 10 days of stuff that was "delayed" till the next datacap.

ild have to say, 100GB isnt hard.. hell, thats how much i use in a few hours sometimes..

i have gotta disagree. i have been known to just leave youtube playlists going 24/7 (automatically forced to the highest quality available.)

seeding a torrent, sure plausible, but atlest imo, if your stupid enough to do that, you really shouldnt be swimming in thoses pools.

i normally push a good 600GB~1TB a month.

most of that being "free data".

I pay for snaps free youtube addon, to insure youtube does not run up. make use of offpeak where need be, and well often live in the later parts of the day anyway so that also lands in free offpeak.

lol, sure they don't. (referring to bolded section). and I bet they don't ever leave the lights on or leave wet towels on the shower floor either :P

and how do you calculate $30 less? Vodafone's 500GB naked ADSL plan (including the discount for locking you into their expensive mobile plans) is still $79 ($109 without the discount). $30 more than that would be $109, and none of the three providers I listed charge that much.
Even the most expensive of the three I listed, Orcon, charges $99 so that is still only $20 more per month (and that still includes a landline). Slingshot charges $90 for naked, so that is $11 more, and Bigpipe charge $79 for naked, the same. Where did the $30 come from?

How can you pay 'exponentially' less per month? did you mean a different word? Exponential refers to a rate of growth or decay, but you are talking about a constant difference.

to the OP - you are better off, IMHO, going with an unlimited plan from one of those three, and switching your mobile to 2Degrees or Skinny as the value there is so much better than VF anyway that you will probably save quite a bit of money overall and still get unlimited data. you also won't be locked into only one provider with rolling contracts that end at different times forcing you to stay with them basically for ever.

you disagree? even though you have done it yourself and use more than 500GB every month?
If you average, say, 700GB then, on VF, you would be paying an extra $200 per month for your connection.

yeah, that could be a good option for the OP if most of his teenagers usage is youtube. But still easier just to go unlimited. This isn't like the days of old where unlimited plans had terrible speeds. They don't seem any different now from plans with datacaps.

personally, i perfer a capped plan. ill gladly pay a spot more, for that extra level of service expectation.

yes i do disagree with your position on unlimited plans. i agree, being care free is nice. but the level of service and what i expect in terms of a network, just isnt there on unlimited. it cant be, it will just cost too much.

just wondering why you disagreed, even though you have experienced the exact thing I mentioned, and, had you been on the VF plan we were discussing, you would have racked up hundreds of dollars of overage charges. seemed odd

that's what I meant by my last point.

Go back a couple of years, and I absolutely agree, unlimited plans were pretty bad. Lots of shaping at peak times, poor performance.

But look now and you see no more real issues on the unlimited plans than you do on plans with caps.

It's presumably a combination of better local caching, smarter networks, much cheaper southern cross capacity.
