sorceror: ...what does 'lets keep moving forward in the technology space' even mean? now you're talking about moving forward in terms of max throughput, a completely different premise to what you originally posted.
In this instance I was meaning that we should be looking for the fastest technology solution available to us in an area, not choosing a slower technology just because the contract terms are shorter.
I agree with the implication by the OP that it just doesn't seem reasonable to have to commit to 2 years.
What's more, when I hear that commitment is causing folk to choose older slower technology choices then I think that's not good.
As a content provider, we need people to be connecting to fast networks so we can sell them more content. So we need the network guys to play the game in a way that gets customers connecting with the fastest service.
ADSL that's caped at 15mbit means this guys not going to use more than email, web browsing and possibly a single IPTV stream at a time.
130mbit Cable means he could also be doing online backups, uploading videos, the list goes on and on.
It also means that he might go out and buy a second STB like a Google Chrome Cast or another AppleTV box. He might choose to download a movie from iTunes and want to make a back up so go buy another external hard drive.
I feel that some times the 'network guys' forget that the whole IT eco system isn't just about them. It's about all the rest of us too that relay on them doing a great job so the rest can get a bite of the pie.
