sorceror: ...what does 'lets keep moving forward in the technology space' even mean? now you're talking about moving forward in terms of max throughput, a completely different premise to what you originally posted.

In this instance I was meaning that we should be looking for the fastest technology solution available to us in an area, not choosing a slower technology just because the contract terms are shorter.

I agree with the implication by the OP that it just doesn't seem reasonable to have to commit to 2 years.

What's more, when I hear that commitment is causing folk to choose older slower technology choices then I think that's not good.

As a content provider, we need people to be connecting to fast networks so we can sell them more content.  So we need the network guys to play the game in a way that gets customers connecting with the fastest service.

ADSL that's caped at 15mbit means this guys not going to use more than email, web browsing and possibly a single IPTV stream at a time.

130mbit Cable means he could also be doing online backups, uploading videos, the list goes on and on.

It also means that he might go out and buy a second STB like a Google Chrome Cast or another AppleTV box.  He might choose to download a movie from iTunes and want to make a back up so go buy another external hard drive.

I feel that some times the 'network guys' forget that the whole IT eco system isn't just about them.  It's about all the rest of us too that relay on them doing a great job so the rest can get a bite of the pie.

^ that only makes sense if the service provider is also the content provider (like in America).

how would an ISP in NZ, where unlimited caps are the norm now, benefit from a customer that can download faster? if anything it would be detrimental to them because they would need to purchase more backhaul and transit (and they won't be able to charge more, it's not like cable is 10x the cost of DSL, even if the speed is 10x).

Firstly I think you have to sell more than access.

ISPs need to sell equipment too.  2degress, Vodafone and Spark all do this already.

In the home, more speed and performance means CPE opportunities.

So the next obvious question is if CPE providers should get into service delivery?  The answer to that is an obvious 'yes'.  Power companies did.  They provided power then got into appliances that used that power.

DSE and Noel's should both look at the service provision space to boost CPE sales.

Power companies should also all look at serivce provision because more service means more stuff using their power in the home.  I see Trust Power have already made this connection.

As for 'unlimited caps', again this is just history repeating.  We've been here before.  We did dialup to DSL where we had different speeds at different prices with different data caps.  Dialup had speeds, it had data charging then it just went 'best effort' and unlimited.  People used to argue that they were staying on dialup because it was unlimited v's 128/64kbit dsl with a data cap.

Now we're looking at 30/10, 50/20, 100/50 or what ever mixes.  Yes Dunedin has 1000/500, but we're going to see the move to 10GEPON in time and again different speeds at different price points.

We're also going to see new value add products.  Some providers are doing that with back up vaults and media addons.

I expect we'll see CPE add on's too.  You'll see providers giving you a tablet or a STB or wifi extender or something useful with a term contract, not just a discount.

IS Providers will eventually all figure out that the race to the dollar ground isn't in their best interests.
