sidefx: Nobody's disagreeing with the fact it's frustrating, but there really is no chance for what you're asking.

exactly this.

they have to start somewhere and they have to finish somewhere.

they could have dont it better and and done those who are on ADSL first, but they didnt.

most/all urban schools got fibre a long time ago, but this doesnt mean those in the surrounding areas can get it.

yes it sucks, no one is disagreeing with you there, but you need to looks at it from a big picture perspective, its a 1.5billion dollar project, its a lot of work and it can be done in the snap of ones fingers

watsonash: haha. I wonder how many of these comments are coming from people who already have access to VDSL and Fibre?

I have to say though, I don't think its an unreasonable expectation for someone in the middle of an urbanised area with fibre running virtually everywhere except in the section of street that I live in, to be given access to VDSL. Heck there is even a school on Glamorgan Drive where my kids go which must be fibred up.
You don't need to be a geek/gamer to understand that a very poor upload speed on ADSL (about 0.7Mb/s) prevents reliable Skype video calls to family overseas and makes it very hard to use any cloud sync technology for photos/videos etc.
4G doesn't cut it due to the data cost - I'm on unlimited Bigpipe plan currently.

I am on VDSL, and if I couldn't get it or Fibre quickly enough, I'd sell my house and move somewhere. I wouldn't buy a house today unless Fibre was available, this is the importance of fast internet for ME.

No-one is going to guarantee you speeds > ADSL anywhere in NZ. As has been stated before, there are people who will be first and people who will be last to get connected, this is simply the way it is.

You aren't the first person to ask it, or the first person to be given these answers. One of these threads gets started almost daily. You aren't the only one frustrated. You have some choices but they probably aren't palatable for you.

I understand your frustration, but venting it here will not make a scrap of difference, in fact venting in anyway will not make a difference. It's the way it is.

mercutio: i think in a lot of these distance cases bonded vdsl is probably the best way to go, but atm it's cross-prohibitive.

from what i under verizon vdsl in the us will just give the same pricing and use more than one pair if necessary to meet a reasonable service quality level.  so if links do 15/4 or something, then have two and get 30/8.

that would be an interesting concept to see used here, doubt it would come to much though unfortunately..

bonded lines just seem to be too expensive / too much effort to offer.

if there's already two pairs, it just means hooking up both pairs to the one jack.  of course need a modem that supports it too.

i don't see it happening here either.  it was mostly for tv from what i understand.  and we have no competition here.

Not here, and flatmate rebooted their router because snapdegrees was being all laggy and timeout so lost their good sync and are back to 14 down 4 up :(

I was smart enough to just drop the WAN connection and reconnect it so still have my 22/10 that I got after the last time chorus were screwing with the cabinet at 2am. Margin is sitting around 12dB so I have no idea how its holding those speeds but not complaining too much when I see how crap the flatmates is.

Bring on 998!

the email from bigpipe today starts off with;

"Chorus has agreed to roll out UFB fibre to your address right now, ahead of the schedule."

wahoo! I get so excited I forget to read the next line which says;

"They would however request an estimated financial contribution from you of $43,282.00+GST, there may be further costs for connection, lead in cable and other expenses."

so ADSL for me for all eternity at my address unless some common sense comes out of the 998 trials and the reach of VDSL is extended (which everyone on these forums has previously said is highly unlikely).
Chorus must be finding this very amusing.

Google fibre probably has more chance of coming to my house in my lifetime.

i dropped from 70 megabit to 20 megabit within a month (although was 40+ megabit before someone cut a cable, and it seems the resplicing is broken).  curiously it's the lowest frequencies that are broken, i wonder what 998 would do to that.  there i was wondering if i'd stay capped at 70 megabit down... but being over 15 megabit i suspect chorus won't fix it.

seems to have gone a tad quiet, i would say we will hear more once it gets pushed out for everyone though... December IIRC.
