I'm in auckland and my rates are about the same as yours... The closest cabinet to me is 20m away (on the other side of the road) Vdsl 70Mb on the other side of the road stuff all on mine... That's the way it works some times

There is nothing to stop anybody from setting up as competition for Chorus. And much like unbundling (which for all intent puposes is competition for Chorus) I'd be willing to wager lots of money they wouldn't spend hundreds of thousands installing equipment in areas where they couldn't make a profit, unlike Chorus who are quite happily spending $100k - $200k upwards in some areas just to replace a Conklin serving 50 users. Mind explaining the commercial ROI on that and how a competitor would help? Competitors cherry pick areas they can make money in - that's why we're lucky we have Chorus.
The unfortunate problem for the OP is that they fall into the same position as roughly 50% of NZ premises that can get copper based services but can't get VDSL2 - and have the exact same line speeds that 700,000 odd connections have.
There are easy solutions - there are wireless providers in the area providing competition, and in such a small town depending on the location establishing a wireless P2P connection would be very easy and very cost effective.
I have flagged Steve's last response as an answer because it 'is' the answer in my view.
All the OP needs is to get VDSL installed at a location with line of sight to his and then set up a couple of 5ghz radios. Total investment, $300 and some kiwi know how.
Frankly if you can figure out how to post on Geekzone then you can fix this problem with wireless. Chorus does not need competition, it needs kiwis just working with the networks that exist and making a little investment of their own.
No one screens that TVNZ and TV3 need competition when you can't get TV, you just go and get a bigger antenna and put it up.

Ordered UFB on Wednesday through Spark this week. Got a call from Chorus today with a 4 February installation date.
Love both of these companies. They are everything I've ever wanted in telecommunications companies. When the Chorus folk are doing the install, I'll make them tea and open a packet of chocolate Wheaton and we'll toast the greatest infrastructure project nz has ever seen.
Until I got fibre last month 10 down and 0.8 up was all I could get on asdl2 in middle of dunedin.(now 950/450 !!)
The "AS" in "ASDL" means asymetric so there always a difference and from memory ASDL2 was limited to 1 upload anyway....

Haha was just about to say that - The A is the key in ADSL.
You could look at an SHDSL connection - there are niche ISP's that do SHDSL which was the old way for a faster upload at a cost to your download speed before VDSL, or perhaps inspire might cover the area.
Wow, my install is happening as I type this. Just ninebdays after I ordered ufb, I have people in my house connecting fibre to my house. In the 1990s I never in my wildest technology dreams imagined I'd have this sort of tech running directly to my door.
I'm not sure how this situation would be any different than if it was two houses at the end of a gravel road expecting the local council to tar seal it just for them.
