I finally left dial up behind and joined up with Xnet River plan (full speed down/128k up). Unfortunately I'm experiencing slow sync rates with exchange (and therefore slow national/international speeds). Now I'm aware that many people are experiencing slow international speeds with Xnet, but from what I understand slow sync rates with exchange are independent of the ISP.

Typical stats from my modem (Linksys WAG200G):

DSL Status:

Connected

DSL Modulation Mode:

ADSL2+

DSL Path Mode:

Interleaved

Downstream Rate:

359 kbps

Upstream Rate:

162 kbps

Downstream Margin:

11 db

Upstream Margin:

31 db

Downstream Line Attenuation:

41 db

Upstream Line Attenuation:

13 db

Downstream Transmit Power:

11 db

Upstream Transmit Power:

19 db

Given the distance to my local exchange (New Lynn exchange) is around 2.8km downstream attenuation of 40dB is reasonable. But I was expecting sync rate of around 4~5Mbps with the exchange. I know that rest of the phone wiring isn't loading or interfering the broadband connection as I have a splitter installed at the telecom demarc and a Cat5e connection straight to the modem. This issue with high attenuation was discussed before, hence installing a splitter to eliminate house wiring.

So what else could be causing such low sync speeds? Can I get a Telecom technician to have a look at this issue?

You'll have to contract xnet's helpdesk and go through some basic checks (reset router, unplug other devices, ping tests.. yawn) before they are able to lodge a job with telecom to do a port reset or check your line at the exchange.

Change the modulation type from ADSL2+ to G.Dmt and see if that make any significant difference to your sync rates. Also try connecting the modem into the wall jack by itself and unplug all the phones in the house and see if the results are different.

Do whatever you want to do man.

I did notice a difference of about 100kbps, but it's not the reason for slow sync rates.

As I have installed a splitter at the NID don't think other phones are loading the line.
