Try switching on your wireless (assuming you have a wireless enabled notebook) and scan around for a wireless router. If you can find one in the neighbourhood with good strength, chances are that they are located fairly close to you. Go knock on their door and see if they would be interested in a sharing deal with you until you filter up to the top of the list for a cabinet position.

You might get lucky and find someone who wants to reduce their connection costs.

In all seriousness, I would consider it...except...I called to make sure I could get it HERE before I moved in. What are the chances someone's gonna just say it's available again - only to move in & have them say "Yeah, it's available...in about a year from now!"

Seriously, I'm not laughing! This is costing me...much!

You should have ordered it before moving in, or made it a condition of taking the house.

Oh, that's right, I live in the real world...

Finally heard back from Matt Crockett. Telecom is scheduled to upgrade the cabinet & connectivity to the exchange April 2010. I guess I wait. Hopefully my business will survive on mobile broadband until then.

Hi JoCool,

Moving house is obviously not an option - I have been told that peach before!

Not to state the obvious but that house in the line of sight of the Nautilus building, how high is it? Could you raise a reciever above the height? What about bouncing the signal of some nice neighbours house that has line of sight?

Broadband isnt classed the same as water sewer and power as being essential. If it is to you then its just insane to not make sure it can be delivered before committing to move to a place. I dont see why you are acting so defensive when being pointed out to you that you have done something foolish.

I really don't think it helps in calling him a fool.

There have been quite a few incidents described on this very forum that tell of assurances of bb provision then when house purchased low and behold nothing available - down to poor planning of new houses built and poor figure projections!

Hi richms.

Not acting defensive, just pointing out that hindsight is a wonderful thing... Also, if you read my original post you'll notice that I did ask Telecom about it & was told that yes, it was available.

Now that we know the situation, I called Telecom again & they said that the only way to be sure was to pay for an engineer to visit the cabinet prior to purchase. They also said if we did it too often they would say no... And then the available ports could be populated between the time we pay for the engineer to visit & when we actually request the connection!

Appreciate the comment. Sometimes when we're in this position we miss the obvious. Actually, I had thought of this but I'd need a 6-7m tower to get line of sight. Pretty sure I'd need resource consent for that - and probably wouldn't get it because of the neighbourhood.

Just so everyone knows, the purpose of my post was not to trash Telecom - as enjoyable and plain easy that is - but to legitimately try to find suggestions & options for someone in this position.

I appreciate constructive feedback!

I know officially you would need resource consent but what they don't know.....unless it's a 6-7m tower!

I would personally have a chat with a higher up neighbour and bounce the signal back to you - seems like the only way, and you may get away without resource consent.

There was some discussion about resource consent with wireless and why is was different from cabling, which, I have heard, you don't need resource consent.

Another suggestion is contacting Andrew Hooper from Borg Wireless, he is used to bouncing signals all over the place. The wireless signal should be able to be provided by him dependant on primary provider.

Er.... There are a couple of models available in New Zealand - one with built-in CDMA and another that accepts PC cards and USB - from both Vodafone and Telecom. I have one here at home and posted a review some month ago.

It may very well be a good start.

Fossie, I posed that exact question to Matt Crockett, CEO of Telecom Wholesale. Basically there was something about bandwidth to the exchange...we have a schedule for upgrade...april 2010...but he did say they'd review their schedule. Crazy thing is, this area is GROWING. 4000 new homes to be built...once the economy picks up!
