Really?

Telecom, Slingshot, Orcon -> Maxnet & Xnet do.

I'm not sure about Telstraclear, but I'm sure some more ISPs who peer at APE get access to Orcons cache.

Xnet don't have one? I'm pretty sure that APE connected ISPs are able to use Orcon's cache so that should include vodafone?

In the bottom of your browser it will usually tell you where you are getting data from. If its something like

v14.lscache2.c.youtube.com

You are working off Orcon's cache.

I could only test a few isp's as most filter queries.
If anyone can do a nslookup / dig of the other isp's we can get a table of which ones use which google cache.

Orcon's DNS servers resolve cache.googlevideo.com to:

ns1.orcon.net.nz: 60.234.81.153
ns2.orcon.net.nz: 60.234.81.154

But, you probably guessed that already.

Techie: Can you do a traceroute using VF's DNS to this site?

You can use Open DNS which will give you access to Cogents Google cache that is quicker than googles main youtube infrastructure (due to google using rate limiters for nz traffic that is not from orcon/telecom google cache).

I will look at the DNS resolvers on the nzconnections site and work out where each google directs traffic that requires youtube access.

are you saying only orcon and telecom users have access to google's cache? why is this? do they pay some money to youtube?

And yuxek, telecom and orcon have their OWN cache.. Located in NZ.
Vodafone etc connect to youtubes servers every time

I believe that other ISPs who peer openly on the APE/WIX can use Orcon's cache, as is the case with Xnet. So that's what vodafone should be doing?

The cache is google's and is supplied for and managed by google operations team.

The ISP simply provides bandwidth to the appliance's uses the ISP's own ip space just like any other client.
The fun bit for the ISP is integrating them in to the network based on the ISP network architecture.

Google directs the traffic based on there DNS algorithm.

Here is the high level steps for the DNS resolving and using a google cache.

You have to be invided, they don't just allow anyone to use their cache.

The tests you are doing won't show ISP's that have their own transparent caches. I know of at least 4 ISP's that transparently cache youtube content.

If you would like to use caching, you can set up your browser to use the proxy server: proxy.snap.net.nz, which will allow traffic to be cached, by default it is not.
