It's on the desk actually, not the carpet, and I've partially hidden it behind the speakers and the monitor and the case itself. It might still get some dust in it, but having it out of the case will actually make it easier to clean.

I have told the kids not to touch it.

Yea no problems doing that if it doesn't bother you.
I've run PCs with all the bits just sitting on the bench without any case at all. :)

It potentially effects the cooling, as before the PSU helped to exhaust hot air from the case.
Now you've only got a large hole for passive airflow, which wont be so good, and the psu merely cools itself.
Especially with slim/small form factor pcs, but you may find the it can handle this.

I'd recommend while you don't have a PSU drawing air through the case, pop the hood open so it doesn't get too hot.
