Hi, probably a bit late in advice for the tech. Did they test the power supply at all? That’s the only thing that would be a stickler in getting a new GPU. As others have said, not good to spend money if you end up with same problem. The evga 600W BR should have no issue with another GPU at 200W TDP, but it is not in the best quality bracket so reliability is unknown.

Another note to my earlier recommendations for replacement. You had originally a 2060 SUPER which is better than a regular 2060. You also have a 4k monitor, I recall this from your earlier thread about memory speeds and your question about performance.

Given this info I would really recommend you step up a tier in GPU (within affordability of course), unless you know the games played explicitly have nvidia DLSS as a feature or you are okay with playing at less than native resolution.

The 4060 is sufficient, but does not perform well at 4k. It has way less L2 cache, less cores and TU’s than the 4060ti but I don’t think the 4060ti would do well either as they both have 128bit memory bus. If you can, get a 4070 or better or early next years 5000 series if you can wait.

I really do not recommend looking at price per framerate, it does not account for what you are actually doing/playing. Like comparing cars that can go 100-120kmph, at what incline, what weight are they carrying etc. many other factors to performance.

Feeling a bit called out here, I did have that caveat in my post and had previously asked use case, price range, res/frame rate etc.

When there isn't a defined goal, $/frame is one of the better ways to define bang for buck.
Obviously a 4060 isn't going to hit 4K 60fps... there is a reason I spent $1700 on a 7900xtx because that was my target.
Not everyone is a lucky as me with disposable income tho.

OK do the plan is to upgrade the whole machine, but not right now. Everything is replaceable but at this moment my youngest is using my laptop to game and while it's fine for my stuff it's certainly not up to his more intensive games. I want to sort the GPU with a view of building off it in the next year or two.
The monitor can be replaced later as his games are the forest, project zombiod, 7 days to die, ark, red dead, rimworld, frost punk, oxygen not included. So I want to ensure he's getting the best experience he can in our budget but, for now, the monitor is OK.

With that in mind I haven't looked at the price per frame rate. What I found interesting was, on the comparison site I looked at, was value for money which I equated to performance hence why I was really leaning towards the 4060 for just over $500.

Thoughts?

Sorry qazzy my bad, not my intention at all. Things always get a bit more difficult at 4k like you said.

@Twalknz72 the best advice is usually get what you can afford right now. Given its coming up to end of year and your kids probably don’t want to wait for a few months on the next gen release.

The monitor is not bad, in fact the issue is because it has high resolution (good) you need a more powerful GPU to run it. You don’t need to replace it if you don’t want to.

For a 4k resolution, at least a 4070 minimum or 4070ti if you are intending to build around it in the future. The problem with value for money comparisons is it sometimes misses the target goal, there is no point purchasing something that does not perform well specifically at 4k, ergo you end up having to go for the higher tier gpu’s to meet that mark.

If the budget is limited to roughly $500, then your choice is between the rx 7600 and rtx 4060. The AMD card does better without upscaling, the nvidia card does better with nvidia dlss upscaling only if available.

The third option is buying secondhand until you get around to building a new machine. The nvidia 3060ti is actually comparable to the 4060ti which is why you may see negative comments about the 4060/4060ti as it was not much of a uplift between generations. Only get previous gen if it is a good deal.

PS: I used a 2070 super back in 2022 on a 4k 120Hz display. It was acceptable, upscaling worked well on performance/balanced mode. The 4060ti should do just as well nowadays, even though game requirements have gone up a bit since then.

So this would be good then? I don't know anything about AMD and only marginally more about NVIDIA.

Thank you

Personally would get a 4060 over the 7600

Sorry missed the 7600xt as well. It comes down to 4060 or 7600, 4060ti or 7600xt, and they are all comparable price which isn’t great.

It’s not ideal but 4060 really does end up the best choice at that price point of $500.

The fact nvidia lets you use DLSS and frame generation would benefit you much better with your monitor.

If you are interested in 2nd hand both of these appear in your price range.
