::UPDATE::

looking in the event logs on the front end exchange server, the following event is logged:

Unexpected Exchange mailbox Server error: Server: [backend.exchange.server] User: [xxxx@xxxx.xxx] HTTP status code: [409]. Verify that the Exchange mailbox Server is working correctly.

there is nothing logged on the backend exchange server. is there somewhere specific where activesync for exchange logs to?

i've had a bit of a google around for http status code 409 but havent come up with much.

also just heard from the person who said that their jasjar was working fine - apparently it isnt working, he thought it was but there weren't actually any new email messages, and it is exhibiting the same symptoms as this apache. so this appears to be a server configuration problem or somesuch. the server is operating in a hosted exchange/MSP environment, and as far as activesync configuration goes, all we have done is installed SP2 for exchange and left activesync with its stock standard settings.

thanks in advance guys

- sam

From Server Activesync Error Codes

HTTP_409
8501000A
The user should resubmit the HTTP communication with more information.
Verify the information and settings associated with the HTTP communication and try again.

Folks, thanks everyone who contributed to this thread. By looking at the symptons described here, and after a couple of private messages exchanged (no pun intended) with slide and with some internal Microsoft contacts it came to the point where it looks like this is not a Windows Mobile or ActiveSync issue, but rather an Exchange problem.

Microsoft pointed to the KB 827615 Server ActiveSync does not download all items during a synchronization session but after deactivating the AV on this server slide was still reporting problems with the synchronisation.

Since this looks like a server issue, he will check the possibility of contacting the Microsoft PSS to see what can be done from this point.

The positive part of this is that we had some suggestions of basic things to check if this kind of issue is encountered by other users.

We have a large company. One shared OWA server used by approx 10 Business units - each have their own Exchange servers. All business units can sync fine and their mail, contacts, calendars are displayed - except for one. I have tested using different devices (Apache/Falcon) with the same issue - using another Business unit's logon credentials on the same device works fine. Mailbox in question only has 6 messages in and 5 in the calendar. I think we can rule out the OWA server (because it only affects one company) and we can rule out the handheld device (because I proved the device works with another company). Which leaves us with the Exchange server at the company in question's site.
