bongojona: I will stick with the two old telephone books under my monitors ;P

Wow...  some people!.  I'd never be that cheap.

I use reams of photocopy paper.  :)

Dynamic: Here is another range you can look at.  New to NZ.  PM me if interested and you can't find a supplier.

I've looked at the animations of the desktop mounted stands with articulated arms and they're no different to the ergotronic ones.    None provide the freedom to move the monitor 1-2ft behind the  the desk.  An articulated arm, mount or pole would get in the way.

andrewNZ: Most of the links provided should work, but you might have to mount the stand off to the side so the monitor can get past it. Provided the arm section that connects to the monitor is long enough to reach the edge of the monitor, you would be able to push back as far as the second section is long, (a bit like holding your phone or tablet at arms length with your hand up he back of it).

I know what you're getting at.  If the forearm were long enough to reach past the side of the monitor I could position the monitor as far back as the upper arm allows.  There's one major problem with that.  I couldn't keep the horizontal position of the monitor the same in its back position and forward position.   If the upper arm were extendable or telescope I believe that would do the trick, but all I see are desktop monitor stands with fixed length articulated arms.

Bull pies. I seriously think you need to find somewhere that stocks or uses these sorts of things and have a play, they'll be a lot better suited to your use case than you think.

For 1-2 feet, you are going to need one that bolts to the desk rather than using a clamp and your desk is going to need to be heavy. Clamps aren't designed to hold the weight that way.
