Hi there and thanks for the excellent set-up instructions.
Attached is a picture of a slightly different way to set-up the WAN. I followed your instructions but instead of setting up as Dual WAN with DSL and LAN, I turned the Dual WAN setting OFF so that only the WAN is provided through the LAN port.
Using this method I don't see errors in the General Log of the DSL-N55U where it is failing to access the DSL connection and the Network MAP > Internet (as shown) looks more like what I expected.
The only downside is I can't browse to the web page (192.168.1.254) of the TG589 any more which I could do using your original method. Any solution for that? FYI my network is on 192.168.0.0 Also for some reason (firmware bug?) every time I go to the WAN page of the DSL-N55U it shows me the Internet Connection settings for the DSL connection and I have to go to the Dual WAN tab (at the top of the page) then back to the Internet Connection Tab for it to show me the PPPoE settings. I should pop into the ASUS forum and tell them about that bug.
Basically this method achieves the same result so I offer it here as an alternative for anyone trying it out.
Update: When I went to the ASUS forum to advise of the bug, there had been an update to the Dual WAN firmware. Downloaded and installed the new Firmware 3.0.0.5.374_150 and it has fixed the problems I mentioned above. So I can now enter the TG589 web page and the DSL settings do not incorrectly show up in the Internet Connection page of the DSL-N55U. Below is the updated Network MAP > Internet page the Dual WAN page didn't change.
So basically you don't have to set-up the DSL for Fail over in the Dual WAN page as shown by the op.
