Goonertron: I think it is more to do with Telecom sending you a s****y $40 router. We signed up for UFB, the person on the phone said they would give us a business grade router and today a tp link router turned up that was significantly worse than our 5 year old thomson router. The wifi range was so bad I couldn't even load up speedtest plugged in the old router in the same spot and got 5mbps wifi. It's terrible that telecom seem to put out worse routers each year. UFB with a $40 router and no antenna is just criminal.

That's strange because Telecom aren't using TP-Link gear.

To be honest though the WiFi performance in most TP-Link gear is pretty good, even in RF dense environments with a low noise floor.

What i've done is ive ditched all hope with wifi completely, i just run cables along the floor to the devices that can be plugged in via Ethernet. only things that connect to wifi are friends laptops, my phone and my ipod.

here's a thing i made in paint that shows a very basic version of my setup.

i am thinking about asking dad if i can put the cable through the wall where the modem and the gaming computer are back to back, but since the walls have just been repainted i dont think that will go down well.

Ethernet is honestly the best solution you could possibly get, its gigabit, much faster and cheaper than powerline networking. you could even put the cables in wee ducts along your walls if you find yourself tripping over the cables but I never have that problem.

The OP has already said he has tried using his existing Asus DSL-N55U for the wifi. The N55U is dual-band N600 capable. And to be fair, the TG589vn is actually decent (though it's wifi performance pales compared to the N55U).

Also I guess you don't know how much VDSL routers cost. Telecom don't send out TP-Link routers, the routers they use for VDSL and UFB are perfectly fine for your standard residential or small business customer and are designed for high speed connections also. The routers cost vastly more than $40 - in fact they're more in the $130 pricemark but Telecom are also a business and as a business they have to make money, if they're giving away expensive routers you'd find for starters the standard home user won't use most of the features on it and it'll be a waste of money for them to give out.

Try owning a business selling xDSL solutions at competitive prices, you'll soon come to realise that it's a low margin product and see why they don't give $250 routers out to customers on residential plans, plus also you've still got to pay bandwidth charges, deal with routing, fibre, servers, staff etc. It's simply not viable.

If you've been following Geekzone however you'd come to understand Telecom are designing a custom high-end router with the end customer in mind, this won't be given out for free but it sounds like a damn good option for people like you and the OP.

Anyway, this is very off topic, if you want to discuss this I'd recommend you start up another thread.

Gangsters i need some more your help.So the thing is there are 3 strong sources of wi fi signals which influence my speed the most. Our smart building manager thought it will be a good idea to install on each level AP( u know like in hotels) so everyone can enjoy the net for 10 bux a GB...what a fool.the signal is so strong that next to my router i get a full strength signal from anothe AP.So we have Ap on each level and i also get interference from another 2 levels(one top one bottom). You know that they use super powerful routers and also an antenna. So what i did before i was just switching it off. My smart manager always turn it back on when he vacuums the common area. Before i turned it off i asked all neighboors and no one actually use it bcz they have there own interenet. However, it is impossible to prove anything to the manager...so what can i do about it?and yes these aps always change their channels...

sometimes e even get 25-27 on wi fi...ololo thats a lot

empty threat, besides i dont think turning his wifi off (that apparently no one uses) constitutes vandalism
