Will the Ethernet ports still operate as a switch. I want to connect a Ubiquiti UniFi UAP-LR 2.4GHz N300 wifi to this so I have the range I need

Are you in a residential area? If so you need to seriously think about a dual band access point (2.4 and 5 GHz) as while the 2.4 GHz radio will give you the range the congestion in that spectrum can cause throughput issues.

I see PBtech has them, the Ubiquity apparently needs a server because of the DCHP, I see the grandstream possibly needs one too. Am I correct?

The spark Hauwei router / modem (Fibre internet) where we will connect has a dynamic IP address, we have two win 7 PC's connected via the router and we want to communicate with 25 android devices

Your thoughts?

You will also need to buy a new router as well as the HG659b has (or at least used to unless things have changed) a 32 device limit in the DHCP table. 32 devices is a lot for a router to cope with, and even plenty of off the shelf routers will really struggle with that many devices in the NAT table.

The Ubiquiti UAP-LR appears to be 2.4 GHz only.

Correct. UniFi AC-LR is the dual band model.

Hi I would go for this dual band ubiquity UAP-AC-LR model but am also looking at the grandstream GWN7610. I have been told that the Ubiquity model is really for use with servers, we intend using our Hauwei HG659b router with the WiFi turned off. There is a thought that the Grandstream would be better.

Any comments?

I have no experience with the Grandstream, but am doing exactly this (and have done so for about a year) with a Synology RT2600, with excellent results. The modem function of the Spark modem works flawlessly and the WIFI function of the Synology is brilliant.

I still have no idea what you mean about the UniFi AC being "really for use for severs".

The main difference between the Grandstream and UniFi AP is that the UniFi software requires controller software to be running for configuration and management which can be run on any PC on the local network or a remote hosted controller. The Grandstream AP runs the AP management software locally within a master AP configured from a web browser.

As I explained above you also can't use your HG659b and need another router anyway as the HG659b has a 32 device DHCP limit and even if you assign static IPs to get around this limit it will be close to choking at 32 devices as it simply doesn't have the processing power or RAM to cope with such as large NAT and connection tracking table.

Totally understand what you mean... I look after several Charities which are similar... best to go with something that is available retail/wholesale and price it up accordingly... I might have missed it, but what's the floor area to be covered and is it all on one level?

Thanks for your interest, I estimate the floor area is around 800m2 the distance from the proposed WiFi transmitter would be max 30m, there is a downstairs which ideally we would like to cover when we use a laptop on WiFi (speed is not essential in this instance and there would be no traffic in the upstairs region when we are downstairs). The existing Spark Hauwei is downstairs and can transmit a good to upstairs for around half of the distance. Based on other clubs the more powerful WiFi will is perfect for upstairs and if it is a bit slow for downstairs for the odd time we use it so be it.

Any thoughts on other units?

I don't have any experience with the Ubiquiti or Grandstream products, but have used OpenMesh for almost a decade now and (while the others are somewhat cheaper), they are super-easy to set up and use, have a great GUI to manage and require zero upkeep. I've just deployed one of their POE switches along with 18 AP's for one site and the coverage is supreme for all of the up to 25-30 or so staff who have pretty much all their devices connected wirelessly.

I'm sure the Ubiquiti line (as they are cheaper) or some of the other 'mesh' products would be perfect for what you are trying to do, and as you are applying for a grant to cover the cost, imho you should be thinking mesh, as I thinking you may struggle with any single AP in a 30mx30m (or thereabouts) space for 25 wireless devices.

I know I'd be wanting to put at least 2 but probably 4 AP's in that space to be safe.

Some of the Ubiquiti guys will be able to chime in with exactly what you need for that space, but I'd go to a reputable company armed with a list, and simply ask them for a quote (including installation if that is above your expertise), and then seek your grant and when it comes thru, you'll have a setup that you have total confidence in and will be able to manage as required (as you get more familiar with it), that will adequately service your needs.

I had this exact setup earlier this year (GWN7610 plus HG659b) and it worked really well. Replaced the HG659b with the Grandstream GWN7000 router a few months ago and am very pleased with the combo. The GWN7610 is fairly easy to set up using the inbuilt web page and it has plenty of scope for customising.
Check out Go Wifi for buying, plus they have YouTube videos for setup.

Thank you, I have talked to GoWifi and they appear to be good. They have sent a quote and we did discuss the Gransdtream router but when I asked if it had the VOIP phone connection, he was unsure. I will research and it makes sense to start with the WiFi then upgrade the router
