Right in that case, something seems off.

Often with the readings i'm seeing there it can indicate a issue with the cable itself. thus asking there first.

Can you provide me with your details so i can dig deeper? the request i made earlier is just the easiest to compare the two without needing to dig around and delay fixing things.

Circling back around on this one.

Two different chipsets are preforming very differently on the line is all.

As expected, the TCN Based chipset is preforming worse than broadcom.

Given the actual condition of the line (it's decent aside from a few bridge taps)

I find it really interesting how poorly the TCN preforms, i suspect it's failing? or has a loose contact in the jack.

Upstream, there is a potential iffy join, nothing ground breaking though.

@OP, How is the phoneline?

Line itself is a 5dB line, perfect candidate for about 40/8 VDSL.

I've recommended an upgrade to VDSL.

The phone line is OK now. Before the disconnection problem was fixed, sometimes the phone line had static noise only with no dial tone. But that hasn't happened again since then.

I have changed to VDSL now. Will this help with the Asus modem connection speed?

Also, I noticed that the modem takes about 15 minutes to establish connection, cycling through DSL "Waiting for init", "Initialising", then "Link down" repeatedly.

Should take at max a min or so to establish a connection.

Try resetting the asus.

EDIT:

When you say you have changed to VDSL now, do you mean you changed the setting in the modem? or called to make the request?

VDSL Change needs to happen on our side not you side (you just need a modem that will do VDSL)

I mean I have changed the plan to vdsl from the spark website.

It does take 15 mins everytime to establish the connection. I have tried resetting the modem, but it still has trouble.

The other modem does not do this though?

Will be interested to see how it shows on the test when that comes through tomorrow morning...

If it does it universally, we have an issue to look into :)

Yes, only the Asus has trouble connecting.

I'm not using the Asus right now as it is too slow. I'm still using the TP Link.

Sounds like the Asus is borked.

What I'm confused about is that it works great at my friend's house (actually they have VDSL). So it seems like it can't function properly on my house's phone line? I was planning to keep this modem and use it when we get fibre connection next year. It should work properly on fibre right? Or should I still get this modem refunded?

The modem is working good now with VDSL, about 30 Mb/s download and 8 Mb/s upload. It also didn't take very long to establish connection, about 2 minutes. I think the problem is solved.

perfect! close on my predictions too.

Enjoy the far better experience with 8x upstream speeds :)

I'm having a different problem now. After a while, the modem loses internet connection and it says "There is no response from the remote server". Do you know what that means? Then after a few minutes, the internet is back. It keeps happening now, but the speed problem is definitely fixed.
