There's no need. There are a number of services that will check if you have a port open.

Well, I tried three times but they got refused... Any other suggestions?

Were you running a minecraft server when you did the test? If not start the server and try again.

Tried opening Minecraft_Server.exe with all my options set (including my ip address) and it said this:

[INFO] Starting minecraft server version Beta 1.3
[INFO] Loading properties
[INFO] Starting Minecraft server on [my external ip]:25565
[WARNING] **** FAILED TO BIND TO PORT!
[WARNING] The exception was: java.net.BindException: Cannot assign requested address: JVM_Bind
[WARNING] Perhaps a server is already running on that port?
And YEAH, there isnt another server or program using the same port...

Even after it said that I tried the port on canyouseeme.org and failed... AGAIN

You can't bind a port to your external IP from your server. Either leave out the IP address in the options or specify the IP address of your servers LAN port (10.1.1.x or 192.168.1.x or whatever).

That is your external/public/internet facing IP which exists on the "outside" interaface of your router. You can't bind it on your server

That makes no sense.

I think he means that if he tells the server to listen on the local address, and then gives that address out to other people who try to connect, it fails, which is of course entirely expected behaviour.

You need to set up the server to listen on the local address and then you are setting up port forwarding on your router so that connections coming in to your external address are forwards to your local one.

So you set up your server to listen on 192.168.x.y (or what ever your internal address is), then you set up port forwarding so traffic intended for 12.34.56.78 (or what ever your external address is) gets forwarded to 192.168.x.y and then you tell people to connect to 12.34.56.78.

Wow... Ah ok! I left the ip field in the properties blank, Success it binded (I dont know how) It seems I can connect using 222.152.x.x:25565 but im not sure other people can connect. Im testing it on another computer now!

Hi guys.
So for a person that has no idea on how to configure the above could you guys explain how to very in step by step terms?

I have had this problem as well, I opened up my local port but cant use my external one nor can my friends to connect to my server.

I have put both of them into my modem/router PR-S300HI congif.

1. Setup the router to allocate a fixed local IP to the machine you are trying to run the server on (or setup the server to use a static IP). This is a local IP address that we will call destination IP.

2. Load up the server software (eg your game) on the local destination machine. Check that windows firewall etc allows traffic on that port, and whether its type should be TCP or UDP or both.

3. In the router's firmware setup it should tell you the external or public IP address, you will need it later and we will call this your outside IP address.

4. In the router's firmware setup, go to the port forwarding page. If it doesnt have predefined rules for your game/server that you can activate then setup forwarding for a the required port. Normally you enter the same port number as both the external and internal ports, enter whether its TCP or UDP, and enter your local destination IP as the internal IP. Apply the setting. Some routers also require your to "save and reboot" the router.

5. Wait for the router to reconnect to internet. Port forwarding should now be working from outside your home network. You need to connect to it from outside to test it, you usually cannot connect to port forwarding by going to the outside IP from a local machine.

6. When playing LAN games, you may need to enter the local IP of your hosting machine if game traffic stays local and doesnt get forwarded on the inside of your network.

Time to find a new industry!
