I wouldnt put a 4 year old on an unlicensed radio with the cesspool of swampdwellers that would try to talk to the kid.

Instead of a walkie talkie why not an old phone with heytell installed?

Picked up some from GrabOne a year or so ago for my 8yo.

80ch UHF PRS radios.

The reason I considered them acceptable is that they also use a CTCSS system with 120 tone combinations.

Yes, anyone will hear what he says if they're listening.

But he won't hear anyone not using the same code.

It doesn't eliminate the risk but it does reduce it greatly.

I also picked up a pair for my own emergency use, so we have four of the same model available.
