Thanks for the tip Shimmer. I did look at Homeseer and it does appear to be very comprehensive.
Is there a supplier for NZ compatible hub and devices?

I'm still going to pursue the Kinect interface and have high hopes for its future potential (on whatever system, or systems I go with) but to be honest I think I am going to give CastleOS a pass.
I'm not sure what their deal is but there are just so many issues making it just too hard:

  • There are few comprehensive written instructions or guidelines. Everything is buried in the forums and can be very hard to find. A google search is more useful than their own website.
  • It just appears to be glitchy and unstable based on the forum comments, with numerous device compatibility issues.
  • Reading through the forums it has been around for at least the last 2-3 years and doesn't seem to have had all that much development.
  • Support varies between great to sporadic to slow and non-existent. I don't know if Chris is trying to do everything by himself but I just wish he would see that if he got some decent instructions and tutorials on the website and was able to offer a timely and reliable support service CastleOS could go far.
  • As home automation is on the cusp of an explosion due to long overdue interest from the big players I just don't see how CastleOS with its issues can put in the development effort to keep up. I hope they do.
For the time being I am thinking I will wait for Samsung Smartthings to release in AU/NZ which I believe is imminent. The newly announced partnership with Microsoft gives this system all the horsepower and potential in the world. Coupled with Windows 10 and Cortana I can't wait.

the voice control looks interesting, but too bad it seems to be limited to a kinect.  especially with the limitation of how many kinects you can connect to a computer (1 per usb bus, so probably 2-3ish), they really bulky so hard to hide in many rooms, most people have more than 2-3 rooms in a house, so voice control would only work in a few rooms.

might download it tonight and have a play with it.  openhab is great but it can be a pita to setup IMO.

I too have been looking for the ultimate solution to replace my ageing Vera2 and after months of research (and doing my head in with OpenHAB config), I've settled on Home-Assistant which is running in Docker on my Synology NAS. Configuration is must simpler than OH and so far it seems to be working very well. No DSC plugin yet but I'm sure that won't be far away. System works with Alexa/Echo too which is probably a better long-term strategy than Kinect?

Home-Assistant seems to be cropping up more and more these days. I have had a brief look but not in any real detail.

How have you found the rules engine for doing more complex logic? It looked kind of basic to me, I guess that is probably what makes it easier to setup/configure, but for what I am currently doing with openHAB I have a feeling it might be too restrictive.

The UI is definitely a lot more attractive than the standard openHAB UI tho, and I do like the baked-in _last updated_ timestamps etc.

I've only just started out and have integrated MiLight and Vera into HA with Harmony and Kodi being added this weekend. Haven't even started on rules yet as have left those in Vera for now. I like what you can do in OpenHAB but I simply don't have the time. OH2 with HabMin2 installed looks very promising as you can use Scratch to program rules but it is a way from being ready for prime time.

Yep OH2 should make like a load easier for simple configs/setups. Which will broaden its appeal greatly.

personally I find OH2 in its current state a complete nightmare to use.  But thats the problem with rapidly changing unreleased programs.  Hard to find current/update to date documentation about how to do stuff.

Havent been able to get zwave working at all whenever I tried OH2, works fine in OH1.

the new "paper ui" I have no idea how to configure most things, most things just seem to install from paper ui and then back to regular old text files to configure them (and I have no idea if you can use the openhab designer with oh2....).

so yeah.... stick with OH1 for now.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.
