Damn, I didn't know you could return without penalty within x time period or else I could have had a cool toy to play with for 2 weeks!

khz9000: i'm retuning my 3G iphone monday and terminating the contract you get two weeks to do this with vodafone. i should not need a diploma in networking computers to use my 3G iphone to use with my wifi that everything else connects to with no problem. + GPS will not pin point you if there is no wifi around, so if you lost on back roads your lost. + about 10 fixs they never bothered to address. to hell with the arrogance of apple i'm going back to Gen1 jailbrake iphone. everything works even a .co.nz button.

GPS will work - but you need a good line of sight to the sky.

Hi

I have just purchased a new 3G iphone from Vodafone and have been trying to connect it to my Wifi network at home.
The name of my wireless network is detected by my iphone, however when I try to connect and enter the password a message comes back everytime saying "unable to join the network". I am usually pretty good with setting up devices/computers on a wireless network, however this has me stumped. I am using a WEP 64 bit encryption password.

I have searched the internet for a few hours today to try and sort out the problem and so far I have done the following:

* Reset my router and/or iphone
* Tried to manually enter the network details into my iphone
* Tried to connect to the network with and without a password being required

Following each of these methods the same message has come up. Does anyone here have a possible solution to my problem? If not, who would you recommend I talk to in order to fix the problem. A wireless network expert?

Ummmmmmmmmm, GPS works fine without Wifi, and I assume (but have not tested it) without GPS coverage, it's the iPhone 2G you love so dearly which needs Wifi to do location services, as it triangulates your location based on known Wifi signals.

I had exactly the same problem with joining my linksys wireless-g network. I cured it by (finally) unpacking the airport extreme base station I bought a couple of months ago, set it up as a wireless "bridge" - the iphone now works really well.

Go figure! I wouldn't like to speculate why this has fixed the problem (does it really need the "N" network?). I'm no expert on wireless networks/iphone issues. Needless to say, the vodaphone support people couldn't help.

After messing around with my wireless settings, I managed to connect to my iphone. Weirdly my iphone wouldn't connect when the mode was on 'mixed' or 'g-only' but as soon as I changed it to 'b-only' it works fine. I would prefer to keep it on mixed as most of my computers use 'g' and by being on 'b-only' the network drops in speed dramatically, but I guess I just have to put up with it!

Is this one of those situations where "standard" interfaces are entirely standard?

Am I right in saying that as long as your internet speed is less than 11Mbit/s that connecting with 802.11g has no added advantage (for surfing the internet) compared to 802.11b?

Hi,

New around here.

Bought an iPhone 3G, vey happy about it, looks gr8!!!!

Suffered from a few problems -
1 - The activation disasster.
2 - GPS didn't work.
3 - Can't connect to wifi

The first 2 problems i solved thanks to this site which was very helpful -

Interestingly, the same thing happens with the Touch. I had 1.14 and it worked fine - now on 2.0 and won't work at home with a Linksys router at least. Theres quite a bit on the Apple support pages. Hopefully whatever made it work on 1.14 can be applied to 2.1.......

I've got an iPod touch - and yes, it happens to me too.

1. "Missing" networks
2. Unable to connect to networks - which after a few tries and refreshes seem to work again for some reason.

Hope Apple get to the bottom of this.

I've also noticed that my battery life has been reduced (by around 20%) from this update.

Sorry that it is not much help with a solution,

However have been able to connect to wifi on the following network configs

- private unsecured (rural property) - DLink DI524

- Private secured WPA with MAC Address - Netgear WGR614

- Private Airport Extreme WPA2 (running g)

- Koru Club open network

The only thing was the signal was not great at 20m through buildings on the unsecured unit which was picked up fairly well with the MBP.

As for GPS I have had it working with Wifi off and also with Wifi running - no problems with either. Accuracy appeared to be within 5-10m. 45secs to lock first time.

Happy days are here again. Just upgraded my router firmware and its all go again. This is a Linksys wag54g v.3 upgraded off the AUS Linksys site to 1.00.46 from 1.00.23. Seems to be what others are doing as well with this router.

Thank you so much for posting this. I assumed my firmware was the latest after visiting the NZ version of the Linksys site which only had 1.00.23. Never thought to look on the AUS site as I assumed they would be the same... Updated my firmware to 1.00.46 and now my iphone works perfectly with mixed mode meaning I can use all my computers/devices on 54Mbps again! Thanks :)

The change from WEP to WPA suggested by ALSTA worked for me. I could not connect my iPhone 3G to my wireless network after many tries unless I broadcasted with no encryption. As soon as I changed to WPA (allowing the router to reboot), entered the same passphrase & then tried to connect my iPhone it worked. Thanks ALSTA! ** dw
