So I found this advice on another site and wondered about it. Is resetting the network settings dangerous? I am quite new to all this sort of stuff and don't want to bust my iPhone on day 1!

That didn't work for me...
But this did from: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398 In some cases you may need to reset the network settings for your device. To do this, choose Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Then I turned of all WPA on my router, connected - it got an IP! So turned WPA back on reconnected and wireless is still working!
I tried the network setting reset and had no luck and I also tried a soft reset (I think that is what it's called) and neither have worked. I rang the 00800 7666 7666 and spoke to a guy there and asked his advice and he said that there are problems with wifi (worldwide). So I am guessing that it is now a waiting game until it is fixed. Do you think that Apple (or whoever) will actually admit there is a problem and come up with a solution?

Apple will be forced to make up a Wi-Fi fix soon - this is a major problem... heaps of people with shiny new iPhones which can't connect to the simpliest of networks will be very annoyed.
I do admit that I find it really odd. I had an iPod Touch and never had any problem at all connecting it to wifi networks and having a whole range to choose from. At least I am living in the burbs so don't have heaps of options. I reckon though that if I was working in the CDB and could only find a couple of networks I would initially see the funny side of it. Not for long though. After all, wifi and it's possibilities is part of the reason why I bought an iPhone and only signed on for the cheapest plan. Not great if it doesn't work.
Hey - well I have had the exact same issues. Connected straight away on first day but that evening kept dropping it and issues connecting again. Today I cam home and it just would not connect so saw this thread and then i rang 02. He said he knew nothing about the issue but in end said I could potentially get a replacement and see if phone was at fault.
I initially used WEP and even when I had connection it was like one bar. Turned encryption off and it conencted straight away and oddly with full bars. Then turned on personal WPA and and again it connected straight away with full strength.
So its not dropped since and keeping an eye on it - however not happy at though of any future issues with connecting to WEP networks as these are quite common in hotels for starters...
I called the Vodafone 0800 number today to talk/query the wifi problem and the girl I spoke to said that had received no calls at all regarding wifi problems and were not aware of any. So she noted down my concerns (iPhone not even showing up a number aof networks in the area) and said she would get the technical guys to look at it. Haven't received any calls back so may call again soon to see what the problem is or if they have any solutions.
Hi. My first post. I've been searching the net all day to fix this problem. I configured my iphone 3g last night and haven't been able to connect to my home wireless network (and therefore the Internet) which is based around my Linksys WAP54g v3 wireless access point. I tweeked every setting possible on my Linksys access point including doing a hard reset and also completely setting up my network from scratch. Nothing fixed the issue. I called both Linksys and Vodafone NZ and spent 2 hours on the phone with their respective customer support representatives. Still no fix. Finally i went on to Apple.com website and read some posts talking about tweaking dns settings. After playing around a bit i found that this fixed my problem for me. I changed my dns settings on my iphone to 4.1.1.1 and now all is working. I hope this helps while we wait for Apple to come out with a software update. Regards Andrew
