A5X: I had the same thoughts on the 12 month contract thing, but I guess if it is in the term and conditions then there is nothing that can be done. Not that many people would read all of that anyway, likely the part that would concern them first, if they had the time to search through.

Anyway, the way I see it is like this. The email send states:

"Over the next week we will be increasing the amount of bandwidth allocated to your unlimited plan, which means you should notice faster speeds throughout the day."

No where in that email does it say what the current bandwidth is allocated already, and what it is going to increase to?

How is the end user really going to be able to measure the proposed speed increase?

The increase will aim to reduce congestion during peak times. Feedback on this over the next few weeks is welcome.

Empirically, unless Slingshot care to weigh in with some hard facts. Internet traffic is so variable you can't really rely on speed test results.

Hopefully the improvements will speed up the cache as well. I sometimes find that HD Youtube videos are quite commonly very slow to load during peak times while the SD versions are still very fast, which smells like throttling to me given that they're both coming from the local cache.

I do think it's a bit dodgy that they can seemingly decide to charge whatever they like, though, without voiding the contract. Would be interesting to see if that clause can stand up in the disputes tribunal. Though we'll just have to stomach the increase and hope the speed is increased in tandem, as $10/month is a bit of a petty dispute. Just disappoints me that they honour the spirit of the contract and hold off the increases until the 12 months are up, is all.


I think you'll find that they do void the contract when they change the terms if you choose to make it void as a result. Slingshot can alter their pricing at any point, and must give you notification of that. If you continue paying them and don't cancel, then you have accepted their change to the contract. However, if you want to terminate the contract and move to another provider, they can't charge you a termination fee in that instance. Potentially, you may be able to terminate the contract and move to another plan with them, but I'm not sure on that one.

Reading between the lines;
you know what the % price increase is,
they won't tell you what the % bandwidth increase is,
therefore the % increase in bandwidth must be (much?) less than the increase in charge.
