Yes, they should do a better job explaining potential wiring issues with VDSL. Maybe it just depends who you talk to - When I signed up I'm pretty sure the CSR I talked to did ask if I had a master filter\recommended one. He was only satisfied that I didn't need one after I explained that my line runs directly to a single jackpoint (No ETP) and that I'd already disconnected the other daisy chained jackpoints off that one.

You may find it's fairly simple to fix in your case to: Open the first jackpoint in the house and post a picture of the innards. You *MAY* just need to disconnect a couple of wires...

This is the phone jack closest to the street. it is also the one i want to use. the other two are at the very back and internally they are very simple, nothing like this one.

Ive just tried 3rd phone jack and seen an increase to 31900kb/s. Db still showing as 12 in DSL tab.

To be honest I am not impressed. If Snap had told me I needed new wiring I would have post poned VDSL until I could afford to do so. Now I'm faced with my landlord not letting me have any wiring done.

you're significantly over 15 megabit down, and 5 megabit up.

i know that but if im on VDSL and my expected DB is 5 I should be getting closer to 50mb up.

If you are confident doing it yourself, and you can identify the cable coming in from the street in the top picture, you could just leave that connected and disconnect the rest (maybe take a before photo so you can put them back later). You basically want to remove the connections from that master jackpoint to the extensions

The fact that you get a connection when plugging your modem into your other jacks indicates that you should have either a master splitter, or no stubs/extensions. A filter will mean that the other jackpoints get no DSL signal.

Is it naked VDSL or do you have a traditional homeline over the top as well?

If its naked, then I'm thinking you/your landlord-sparky could just disconnect the white/blue/red wires in the first jack - therefore isolating the rest of your houses wiring, disconnecting the other two jacks and negating the need for a filter. Easily reversible when you end your tenancy too.

Yep, disconnect the two white wires and the blue & red ones, leaving you with just the two thickest wires - yellow and black. They should just pull out with a little bit of resistance

Worth making sure you keep the first photo above in a safe place on your computer to help you put things back together in a years time or whenever

Okay so I have now done this and have had no increase in speed and db is still showing 12

+ 1 this should isolate the rest of your outlets and give you a single link for just DSL, (It will also eliminate the reflections discussed in sbiddles blog)

And if all goes wrong then give us a call :)

Another note is that your upload will not go faster than 10Mbps, the VDSL2 service we use from Chorus has a maximum sync of 10Mbps.

Ive tried a reset, mo attainable is now at 29000kb but speedtest still giving me 20mb and to be honest even 29 doesnt sound right since snap says my db should be quite low. I will give you guys a call.

So my errors have dropped right down. have 50 for past 15 minutes. A lot better than over 10000, so thanks everyone.
Landlord doesnt want me to make any changes to existing system so Ive opted to run my own CAT6 cable from the ETP box and straight into the modem which fingers crossed will cure my crappy 12db.
Anyone have a decent tutorial or some information to get that done. Im around the corner from GlobalPC so will pop in there tomorrow and get the cabling, but not sure what else I need.

If you want to do it quick and dirty, cut one end off a Cat5\6 patch cable long enough to reach from ETP to Fritzbox and scotchlok\connect the inner pair of it to the incoming pair and plug the other end into the Fritzbox - That's pretty much all I'm currently running and it seems to work pretty well. ;-) (EDIT: the single jackpoint I was previously running from worked ok too but meant the fritzbox was in a less than ideal location which is why I moved it - and it reduced the length of cable to the fritzbox)

Be sure to take photos of all wiring so you can restore it when you move out though.

I'd be really curious how the attenuation figure that snap measures is actually measured and how it relates to and differs from the attenuation figure people actually see on the Fritzbox. You're not the first to see quite different figures, in fact I had a prequal done and I think also got different figures.

12db isn't that bad (same as mine in fact) and while you may hope for sync better than 30/10 it seems pretty decent to me since most people on ADSL2+ are more like 14/1...

Have you actually found an ETP box?

The thick black cable with yellow and black wires present in your first jackpoint are the type that come from the grey Chorus pedestal in the street, suggesting that there is no ETP at your flat - the cable runs direct.

Might be worth having another chat with Snap about logging a fault with Chorus, as you have done a full isolation test in your premises

I found a Telecom ETP box on the outside of the house not far from where the first phone jack is. Cant find a screwdriver that will crack it open so will go buy one tomorrow and see whats inside.
But if the yellow and black cables my net is running off now are coming straight from the ETP anyway, will I be wasting my time/effort running my own cable? I realize a CAT5/6 cable will preform better but I don't want to jump through hoops when isolating the line, so far showed no improvement on my attenuation.
I feel stuck in limbo between ADSL and VDSL, my speeds are a lot faster than what I've ever seen on ADSL but not at all what I was led to believe I would get on VDSL.

I'm not sure you will have any luck finding the specific screwdriver bit, just use a flat blade and jam it in those screws.

Just to confirm from your image above, the black and yellow wires do come from a black cable in your first phone jack dont they?

If it is the black cable running from the phone jack to ETP, then upgrading that very short length to cat6 will have a negligible effect as there is hundreds of meters of lower grade cable in Chorus's network between the DSLAM and your ETP, so I wouldnt worry too much about cat5/6.

If your modem is registering errors, then thats a way to start a conversation with Snap about logging a line fault with Chorus, and get Chorus to investigate any problems on your line within their network

I know a lot of people (myself including) would love for your sort of upload speed!
