After a bit of investigation we have identified some routing improvements we can make with the AKl server based on the recent network augments that were made as part of our RWC2019 preparation. We will implement a change to see if this resolves the issue, failing that we will look at alternatives.

My son notices very slow ping xbox gaming at 8pm 150ms. We are on 1gb connection.. and till recently I used static IP.. any chance CG-NAT has impacted here? should I go back static?

Hi there im chucking my 5c in here, last 3 weeks my ping before 8pm is 50 on modern warfare and black ops 4 after 8pm 80 to 90 ms at 10:30 or so back to 50ms.Gears of war 5 during the day shows 30ms to data centre nightime 80.Somethings off.Friends on other providers are not having this(same games btw )

Hi, while it is probably fashonable to throw stones at tech changes, CG-Nat is not one of those technologies that will randomly increase your link latency, however as has been shown time and time again there are so many variables once your traffic leaves your ISPs routers that can and do impact on this aspect.

 

 

 

So I guess what I am saying, yes it would be nice to think CG-Nat is the big evil game crasher, I think you need to think again................... but I could be wrong.............................not!

Nick's smokeping is showing an increase in latency to statler and kif (IPv4, IPv6) at peak time.

I'm experiencing the same thing.

 

 

 

No chance the ISP is at fault though, that's never the case. /s

If that was case then icmp would be consistently high, not just at certain times

 

And it more or less lines up with peoples in game latency going higher at 8pm as well, so something is going on

Reckon they've oversold the gigabit plans, similar thing happening over at Orcon/Slingshot with Aussie performance issues.

@nicknack you could record target up addresses by time if day.
Find the most common target ip . And do traceroute ping by time of day to those ip

See if there is noticeable changes.

What you can do. I don’t know

@attewell Are you aware ping / icmp packets don't have priority on the network and basically go to the back of the line? So as network traffic increases these times will increase

 

 

 

Are you confirming that 2 Degrees explicitly deprioritises ICMP? Can you let us know what else goes to the back of the queue?

 

That would be an explicit decision from them because we are talking about Data Plane for the transport provider, not Control Plane.

No just that my NZ bandwidth halved on the exact same day I was switched over. Perhaps it wasn't CG-NAT itself, maybe it was some other aspect of the change (routing, etc.) they made on that day.

Exactly - it's never the ISP, it's always the measure... and since speedtest is much easier for the service provider to rort, it seems a bit silly to push that as the best measurement tool.

Correct, we are seeing more traffic from Aust and US at the moment - This will be addressed with additional capacity coming, as well as our first AWS and Apple Caches due in Jan/Feb to be commissioned.

not prioritising icmp is normal among many isps, and upstream providers alike, it doesn't affect performance of the connection nor in game performance either
