richms: Not all of them will read from telecom. The bellcore timing is different because the ring is different.

I had serveral cordless phones from the US that would not read the ID back before you could get decent ones here (900MHz analog ones mainly) I think I still have the 2.4Ghz one that nicely wipes out all wifi.

It's not only timing. There are data format issues as well. Some phone makers are guilty of designing to what the major US swiches use not the wider Bellcore Standard. Some references claim that a device that can read Multiple message format will cope with single message as well. I can't remember whether that was true. The initial decoders marketed by Telecom just had stickers covering the Cidco branding and a Telepermit label covering the FCC label.

Maybe something has changed. I dug one of the old Caller ID units out that I know was working 2 or 3 years ago and it just tells me No Data Sent while the Uniden Cordless happily shows the calling number. I will try the unit on the lne it last was working on later.

When people talk about VOIP I was always thinking of skype. I had a short search and now know how wrong I was.

You mentioned getting ATA with FXS/FXO on it and something about Asterisk. I had a google but am not quite getting the full picture. The ATA merges my LAN and the analog phone system. VOIP I guess implies that the calls are routed via the internet. Asterisk is a specific software/ protocol implementation of that. FXS/FXO means that I can use my analog phone system without having a internet connection.
Am I right so far?

If I was to install an ATA do I need to subscribe to an service (who provides them)?

TradeMe came up with this:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/Phone-fax/Other/auction-282732013.htm
http://www.grandstream.com/products/ht_series/ht486/ht486.html
Would this device be any good? Which one do you use?

Do I need to replace my ADSL modem router if I get an ATA?

Do I keep my analog phone plan?

Are you implying that the ATA can extract the caller id from the analog phone connection?

Sorry for being so ignorant.

Cheers
