Slingshot are offering the cheapest prices with the highest caps at the lowest performance and service.

You get what you pay for.

Im not even on AYCE, I pay per gig and the performance I get on that is below what I would accept for an AYCE connection to be honest.

Problem is, who to change to? All the other options are either way more expensive, or have stupidly low caps with no overage options so it will basically break 1 week into the month.

IMO just document all your complaints with them so you can get out of the contract if needed. I asked a lawyer over a beer so it was not real advice, and he recons that as the product is sold as a bundle if you have no resolution to internet issues you can make a strong case to get out the the landline and calling contracts as they were part of a package.

I'm in the same boat -- it sux -- the best solution I could find is Actrix at 2 Gb per day after which time your speed drops.

Any other plan simply didn't suit my budget or my lack of restraint. I've been working with ISP's since there were ISP's in this country and for many years I had free full-speed no-cap internet access as part of my job, so cutting back now is just frakin' painful.

What's worse - I can't shake the feeling that I'm paying more for less access than I would have got 5 years ago if I'd had to pay.

We probably need an ISP run like KiwiBank where all us P2P'ers can pool our resources for a better pipe.

I don't get the analogy to kiwibank? Kiwibank is a SOE and is run like any other bank.

Do you mean something like PSIS, which is a co-operative?

NZJ: I'm joining the long line of people leaving SS. They're just not worth it. It doesn't matter if you pay $1 or a $100, you should expect to be treated with respect. I had my phone, broadband and mobile with them for just under a year, They always blame it on the number of people who have signed up lately... well, let me help you there.

I agree with you.

My big mistake, now I paying ...

I keep reading such negative feedback about Slingshot, and bar one or two minor issues they have provided a service which met my expectations and at times exceeded them.

The few teething issues I encountered during set-up which I have spoken with them about. They have taken on-board my feedback, and as a customer that is great to see.

Background:
Was on Telecom big time plan (2mb/s uncabinetised line)
Was on Telecom Tivo glitch plan (17mb/s cabinetised line)
Moved to Slingshot AYCE (20mb/s cabinetised line)

For the most part web surfing, email and other "standard" services work well, with little to no latency.

Pros
- My line speed went up
- I was clearly informed on what to expect - this included that all AYCE customers are in the same allocated bandwidth pool & that this could lead to slower speeds if there is high usage during peek times
- bittorrent is slow, but what i need to download comes down, it just takes a bit longer at 30kb/s instead of 1.5Mb/s (plenty of time to bake a cake, or spend time with friends)
- I've not had anything but great service when I've needed to call them - I have even contacted the sales/signup crew who engaged with the service Desk (T1-T2) and provided me with answers to another question I had (outside of setup/signup inquiries)
- There was no issues migrating me from Telecom at all
- Signup was painless (signed up on the phone on Saturday, I was migrated Wednesday (3 bus days!))

Cons
- Information pack mailed to me was missing router config information (have raised with slingshot who have made sure their management were aware of this)
- I was one of the unlucky few who needed to use @jetbuster.co.nz instead of @slingshot.co.nz - thanks Geekzone for letting me find this easily at 12:30am - again fed back to Slingshot that this needs to be included in their online knowledge base (support desk were able to provide the background to this issue promptly)

So all up - I'm really stoked with Slingshot.

Thanks for the feedback pilgrim. I'm glad to hear that you're happy with SlingShot, although I'm sure you've seen for yourself from other comments that you are probably in the minority in that regard. Having said that, I did get reasonable service from their help desk and they did succeed in "abandoning" my request for a hookup. I was also surprised by the frankness of the technician who confirmed that my BitTorrent performance would take the biggest hit (but why would you even want an un-capped service if you weren't using a lot of P2P bandwidth?? )

I'm sure we will look back one day and reminisce "hey, remember when bandwidth was capped? -- those poor suckers"

thanks again,

If you have kids then the uncapped means that it doesn't matter what they do, you wont get a massive bill out of it.

That was the biggest thing I got from people who were on bigtime/go large, they did not have to restrict usage or go on a plan that became unusable when they go to the limit.

That and it's good for flats as well. There's always someone in the flat that chews through the bandwidth early on and causes the speed cap to kick in.

It brings predictability to the monthly bill in situations where it's generally unpredictable or uncontrollable.

I think you will find that most people who have good - great service don't post about it - I see a very small number of complaints on this forum in reality considering the number of users on this plan. Any unlimited plan will come with strings, at least they got it right - in comparison to Telecom's attempts this solution is working really effectively.

scottr: That and it's good for flats as well. There's always someone in the flat that chews through the bandwidth early on and causes the speed cap to kick in.

Indeed - when kids come into play, even at an early age - you can't afford to be stung in the pocket by another service provider (get enough greif with power and water bills!) let alone internet costs.

I recall the first time I went flatting - it was unlimited u/d 256k - I had to build a QOS server just to manage traffic for my flatmate's - that was not fun. I'm glad telcos' have addressed the bandwidth issues and imo slingshot have done a very good job with their QOS solution :)

On a side note: It would be great to see more people who are having issues talking about what they would like, and what slingshot could have done to improve the service experienced (from calling them for help through to technical faults)

I would like the very low 40-50kB/sec of torrents they allow thru to not make http basically unusable, http connections not to get stuck in some state that makes firefox not connect to the server anymore untill I go work offline and back again (they seem to count against the number of connections to the server limit untill I either close the tab or work offline)

Agreed. The problem there is that while they advertise their cheap prices and highest caps, they don't tell you about the low performance and service upfront. In fact their homepage (when I can get it to load) says they deliver "The best broadband service in NZ". Pfft.

I've put in a request to have my account terminated early with no fees and have listed all of the problems I have had with them, luckily most were documented since I rang their call centre. Will post back if I have any luck.
