Isn't the one month's notice because you are paying for your internet in advance?

I also think it's unfair to blame Orcon when it's spelt out in black and white in their T&Cs - had you read it, you could've cancelled last month and avoided all this.

Well although I do not necessarily agree with the whole one months notice thing it really is just a matter that had you read the terms of your contract you would have been well aware about the requirement for this.

I doubt very much you decided that you were leaving them and terminating your contract with them in a a day or even a week so realistically you could have easily notified them and not had any further charge for this at all.

Also I find it quite funny you reference the call centre rep sounding embarrassed and that it sounded like you were not the only one caught out by this. You would be certainly right most people do not read their documents fully when signing any contract. Personally I try to read as much as I can before getting bored and not reading the rest.

However the onus is for you the customer to read the contract your signing as the whole purpose of signing is that you the customer have read and understood the terms of the contract.

You are at fault plain and simple. You admit you didn't read the contract you signed, you most likely knew more than a month prior that you were moving and going to be ending the service and most likely the rep you spoke to was embarrassed by the fact that yet again someone who failed at their end is ringing up and complaining about something they (meaning you the customer) failed to do.

Orcon have had this policy for as long as I can remember... I see no problem with it. A month ago, I found out I was moving, I quickly rang Orcon, got a cancellation date of the 4th, and on the 4th of Dec it was disconnected.

Your end of billing period bill will vary depending on how much voice/data you used in that period so it can't really be pay in advance.
