n4: Its very nice - only issue being sometimes when I come back to the phone and wake it up, and hit the widget to see the details, its blank. Have to update again. Is that intended?

I just noticed that myself this morning after the phone had been asleep for a few hours, shouldnt be hard to sort out!!

Thanks for the heads up..

Great thanks. Another smallish issue is that it seems to lose the 'what to display on the widget' settings as well, even after a manual update. Although when I go back and check them under settings they are still correct. I have to re-enter (reinforce?) them and reupdate before the display is correct. I'm not 100% but I think it looses these settings the same time it looses the details on the details page.

working on those problems now, seems something in the system is tidying up when the phone has been "asleep" for a while and the widget looses its data store..

Doesn't work for me. I'm on pay monthly. Using a HTC Desire. When I press the update button it reverts to the home screen and the widget reads 'Updating...' then it reads '2Degrees Balance' but nothing else. When I go into the menu the 'Last Update' reads 'None'.

Hate to be a stick in the mud here, but has anyone talked to 2Deg about this project?

Sure, while it's in dev with a very limited number of users there won't be any issue.

However the web site, I'm sure, is provisioned for an expectation of people checking their billing data weekly and not after every call.

I thought about this last night because the performance of the web site seemed to be quite poor and I read the comments about pulling 100k per page (for something that should require less than 1k).

5,000 users pulling 100k every 10 minutes might be more load that the web server's been configured for.

However my next consideration is the db load that the web server then puts back on the dbms/billing system pulling these web pages together.

Again, I have no idea at all, which is why I'm asking if anyone's talked to 2deg. I haven't noticed any input from ^MD, who usually comments on this sort of stuff.

The same is happening for me now - I have an IDEOS. I uninstalled the old widget, and installed it again from the Market, and now it just updates with nothing, saying 'None' as the 'Last Update'.

Interesting, its still working for me - ie getting data, pay to check your username (mobile)/passwords. unless 2 degrees went down.. I have so-far ensure that if no data is retrieved (in the situ where the page loads with maybe an error message), then the current information is not lost.

I have not talked to 2degrees, and yes it would be better to have some proper interface to their data, mind you they could be against the idea, companies can be strange about these things..

I am still "decoding" some of their web page to see if there is a better source of the data.. Its also possible that I can cut it down by using the same session ID - ie when the widget starts for first time (after install/ restart) then it does the session ID grabbing, then from then on it only retrieves the data page, only going back to the initial page if there is an error..

I am currently working on splitting the code out into a library so I can have 2 application versions,
- Free Version, as it is currently, will have advert, and current features.
- Paid Version, maybe $2.50, no advert, current features + notification of low balances, options to delay for a number of calls before update, timed updates (eg once a day at 1am or every 6 hours) , updates after data connection closed some things like that.

:)

Bear with me, I may have a look at how I can log errors to a file as well.. (that can help me if there is a problem).

Well, what I did was uninstall the old widget, that happened to remove all cached app data too.

I then went into the Market and installed the widget.

Now, it just keeps saying 'Last Update' as 'None'.

2degrees website isn't down, and my user details are correct - checked them on website, and re-entered them on phone, just in case I had missed a typo.

Figure this one out:

I uninstalled the widget again, rebooted phone, reinstalled widget from Market - works fine! :)

I am having troubles myself, seems that going to https://secure.2degreesmobile.co.nz/web/ip/login on the phone's browser is taking a long time to load - so the widget is timing out in my case.. maybe rebooting is clearing someting up..

attempting to get my phone connected to the debugger so i can get some log information. under linux, its not playing happy at the moment..

just tried to login using the phone browser
"The server failed to communicate. Try again later"

Ummm.....

Do you have a tracker on how many people have downloaded and are using the app now?

Damn... I was developing one of these too, I see you got there first! You should add the ability to send the texts to 233 to buy the value packs, and selectable update intervals, otherwise your one is pretty similar to mine except prettier :)

I have another app idea though, will have to do that one!

You should defiantly hit up the 2D rep here! send them a message outlining what you are doing and what you want to achieve and see if there is something that they could build on their side to make this more possible!
Either you hit them up now - Or they bring out their own free version eventually....

Hi all,

We do not support the app, but have noticed that it is becoming very popular and it certainly appears to be a useful way of watching your balance. But because we did not create it, we cannot guarantee that it is accurate or safe to use.

Can you assure us that it won't crash the web server? That's a bigger issue.

It shouldnt do, as it accesses the web server the same way as you might do in a browser!

Much the answer I expected from 2degrees, thats fine by me..

I have been working on the internals of the widget to make it a bit more robust and less likely to bork up (eg loosing data when phone asleep overnight, or loosing the press on widget ability).. It also now stays in the details window when updating, though you can exit that while its doing so, it will update display preference changes without a update, and the 3 options at the bottom have moved to a context menu for a tidier display..

Might be a day or so away, depends on how much time I get to work on it.. and test it..

:)
