It can only see the satellite that it is aimed directly at, and this needs to be accurate to within mm for a good signal. It's completely different to say receiving TV or radio transmissions from different sites on the same antenna.

Or you can fit a bracket and a second (and third) LNB at a different offset relative to the bottom position and on the dish. Both Jayx and Freeviewshop sell these brackets. Apparently you can fit 3 LNB's to a 90cm dish so that you can receive from D1 and C1 and D2!

that would be ideal, I'd love to get D1, D2 and C1 off my 90cm dish. I've emailed freeview shop to see what they can offer me. My only issue is my little understanding of satellites. All I know now is I have a 90cm dish in Southland pointing at C1 and getting me Aurora's Channel 7 and SBS's perfectly, even in our bad snow storms. I've had about 30cm of snow on my dish and still able to get C1 fine.

I've emailed Jayx before asking for info, they seemed helpful enough but not helpful enough for my level of understanding of satellites, a little over my head.

The ideal thing for me would be to get a bracket I can add to my dish that would keep my existing working C1 and add a LNB already inline for D2. Adding D1 would just be an added bonus.

If my understanding is correct, then the $12.50 bracket here: http://www.jayx.co.nz/Package4.html will do what you want when you add 2 more LNB's. Given that the middle LNB is pointing at C1, then the left one points at d1 and the right one points at d2.

Actually I think there is a lot more to be gained from getting a fast internet connection, and an Ozzie and a UK VPN so that you can pickup online content from SBS, ABC, BBC, ITV etc...

Well I have a VPN provider that gives me a few countries but Australia isn't one of them unfortunately.

I get:

US VPN Service
Canada VPN Service
UK VPN Service
Swiss VPN Service
Netherlands VPN Service
Sweden VPN Service
France VPN Service
Germany VPN Service
Romania VPN Service

So I guess I could also use BBC Iplayer but I hear it uses 1GB an hour. Back in Australia I used to have an unlimited ADSL2+ connection for $49 a month that was truly unlimited, upload and download so I could go nuts. I could get Hulu or something similar with the US VPN too I guess but I was hoping one day NZ would have proper internet without all this bandwidth monitoring rip offs that they do before I went onto steaming TV.

Here I can't afford an account that gives me more than 600GB but that includes up and down. I went on a NZ unlimited account and it was rotten, so slow especially in peak times, my 600gb plan has no bandwidth limiting so at least the speed is ok but I run out of data every month already without streaming TV.

I'm happy if I can adjust my dish myself for Optus D2 and get that Russian and Japanese news channel. I don't tend to watch much on Channel 7 now anyway but its a shame to loose SBS.

Fair enough about you paying Australian taxes and using Australian house you own. But if you were to use BBC iplayer which is funded by UK taxpayers would you be fine with saying you are in the UK when you are not?

I pay taxes in NZ.
There is a lot of content on sites like BBC iPlayer, SBS, ABC that is not available in NZ.
I don't see why we shouldn't use VPN's to access content that is otherwise geoblocked.

Not wading too far into this, but why should we be limited to what local government and companies can secure the rights for? That's always going to be a biggest common denominator wins scenario here . ie no free to air F1 coverage etc. There's a relatively small population base and a complete lack of pay TV competition in NZ.

What would be a better scenario is if I could direct to the content provider, paying them for the content I want. With the internet now, there's not the necessity for paying the intermediate delivery company any more. I'm not saying we don't broadcast anything, but at least open up some form of competition via alternative delivery options. Right now SKY manages to hold the rights which ties down content for all of NZ.

Tying this back to the OP. I had a big satellite dish to watch the F1 via Indonesia TV. It worked well but in the end I get a much better coverage (though not immediately live) via 'internet methods' instead. With more TV channels being encrypted and the lack of HD or widescreen content, the satellite option has had it's day for me now.

Well it's not tax payers funding the channels, they fund some of the programs being created through grants especially when its the BBC, the channels are funded by advertising. When we watch them, we too see the ads, sure some of the ads are only based at the local market but some like brand name ads such as Nike or Audi Cars the ads are just as good for us external viewers as they are the locals so they still get some benefit out of VPN users watching their stations, any extra viewers of advertising is good in the eyes of the companies paying for it.

Thats partly why NZ channels are so terrible, smaller market, less advertising money = less channels, worse channels.

Smaller European countries get a lot of their TV from close by larger countries, NZ doesn't have that benefit.

That was the deal for my experience. In Europe for instance you can catch a lot of spill over from neighbouring countries, so the satellite game is pretty fun up there.
In New Zealand we're physically quite a distance from anyone else, so satellites don't return the content benefits I had hoped for.

I'm not up with the play now, but with IS5 once carrying Australia Network and the NRL games for a while, plus BBC world etc and then F1 from Indonesia, the glory days have unfortunately passed for the content I want to see.

Not exactly, there is no advertising on BBC TV or BBC radio - just as there is no advertising on ABC TV or ABC radio. I would be happy to pay a subscription for full access to BBC iPlayer - but that isn't an option... (why not?)...

In my opinion, geo-blocking should be banned by the World Trade Organisation. The US and western governments have been arguing in favour of free trade and globalisation for decades, yet when it comes to media content - they aren't so keen. Why should consumers in NZ have to pay more for content than consumers in the US?

Because "free trade" is actually about supporting globalisation, and the way global media players make money is by extracting as much as they can from each market. With media, that means segmentation.

You might as well ask them to start setting up bittorrent trackers.

Well NZ obviously can't afford to have more quality TV channels, to the point they had to close down TVNZ7. Why can't they just pay licensing to Australia to have ABC (Australia's version of TVNZ7). Surely some license fee's to use the feed would cost a lot less than running a channel and making the shows.

I lived in Australia for 20 odd years, I know their TV well, most of it is pretty poor, there are 7, 9 and 10 which are just the same as TV1, 2, 3 except they don't constantly run the infomercials, I was shocked to see NZ had them all over their TV in off peak hours, how insane.

They have spin off channels of 7, 9 and 10 in the way of 7 mate (decent channel, stupid name which runs a lot of doco's) 9 has Gem which is mostly girly shows and dramas and 10 have One which is mostly sports in HD.

Then there is ABC (Tvnz7 lookalike) but better, ABC2 and 3 and kids which are similar except the kids channel with is cartoons all day.

SBS 1 2 3 which are as you know mostly doco's and foreign language tv.

I think they should just try pay for licensing to use ABC and SBS, both government channels, the government would make more money off them then to create even more content and we in NZ would get some better TV. Only problem is ABC is full of crap about Australian politics which is just a basket case.

Well at least we haven't stooped to making the same pernicious rules about Australians here. We just shun and avoid them in social settings, and support anyone else playing sport against them :)

Did a scan on C1 for VAST on my 3m Solid Dish I can see half of the listed transponders only just above threshold even a small amount of rain and its gone !!
problem is its DVBS2 so needs a bit more signal than the old DVBS Aurora , Austar and Foxtel .

I would say to reliable 5metres and upawards in NZ

If you can get the transponders with ABC and SBS, then I would say that it's worth trying to get hold of a VAST STB/card.
