+1 to the above.

Technically the hardware might all be capable, but it's the software that's lacking, oh and the support, and the testing and the ..... and when you provide feedback it's to a local distributor with only loose links to the manufacturer, and the manufacturer has made their money from the sale already and is on to the next product.

Buyer beware, and buyer make a call on where they purchase too.

ADKM: I would say to anyone considering DiskTV or Utraplus products to be very 'buyer beware'.

DishTV are very approachable and will discuss issues, but their products are as dodgy as hell. I do have a T1020 and it works fine, except if you turn it off. Then it loses color (like it goes to NTSC) for about 5 mins until coming right. One day I suspect it won't. Their 7090 model is a disaster, although some say it's OK.

Ultraplus are just in denial anything is wrong with their products - even when you gve then proof.

I suspect it's all made in Asia for next to nothing, cobbled together somewhere, and flogged off to an unsuspecting public. Not forgetting the four page user guide in pigeon english.

You cant compare DishTV with Ultraplus ,
Ultraplus is made by Fortis in South Korea , same factory as Octagon etc worldwide Quality Product ,
DishTV is made in .... ?

A quick question for anyone watching - has anyone had any luck buying a satellite receiver / PVR abroad and then bringing it back to NZ? I'm going to be in the UK in a weeks time and was thinking of picking one up there (possibly a Humax, they seem to be well regarded?).

I guess what I am asking is are satellite receivers country specific in some way (and therefore a rather expensive paperweight when I get it back to NZ), or is the kit all essentially the same?

I would recommend avoiding a certain DVB-T/S combo PVR also based on what I think of the software. The hardware seems nice, but the software has some bugs, and I was told that the developers ceased working on this project last year.

Heaps to choose from , yeah it will work , just make sure its DVB-S2

Ultraplus was certainly better, but audio out via the RCA plugs had repeated small dropouts or skips. I tried two units and both were the same. The supplier blamed me , my other (outdated and obsolete, according to him) a/v level gear and said I should be using the HDMI output instead.

Well, if the thing comes with composite A/V outputs, they should meet the spec. My setup was tested with several other brand PVRs and all had perfect audio. Was it just incompatability with ultraplus? I don't think so. Several tests were carried out and the audio analysed and a spectrograph and recording shown to both the NZ distributor and local supplier. Neither acknowleded the fault, and probably continue selling them.

Yeap, just move on to the next sucker customer.

Our DVB-S / Satellite freeview is world standard. It was done that way to ensure compatibility, so yeah, most satellite receivers should work fine with no problems.

Terrestrial here is another story and it pays to steer clear of that side of things when shopping overseas.

Surprised at some of the negative comments about the Ultraplus 9000, I have owned one for the last year and have watched it progressively supported with ongoing firmware updates that have added features. I have had no reliability or quality control issues, the unit is very flexible and has a comprehensive feature set. I can't speak more highly about the unit and would have no hesitation in replacing it with the same or its newer brother.

I have had mine for about 2 years. Got it when they came out and apart from early problems, which was resolved with firmware upgrades. The unit is easy to operate and well supported. I recommend it
