AlbinoGorilla: I've been offered a position at both Xero and Deloitte. Deloitte is junior technology consultant, while Xero is in the platform services on Security and Governance. Xero is paying more, with extra benefits. Deloitte I feel would pay better in the long run, and has a much clearer career progression. I feel like Xero would be a great pls e to work for a developer, but I'm a networking/security major.

Would really appreciate any futher help.

While they might work you hard, join Deloitte and see the world! (Speaking as an ex-Deloitte management consultant myself)

You're out of uni, you have no experience to give useful consulting advice. You'd be doing drudge work at Deloitte. Xero would be a great company to work for, security is become more important every day and would set you up very well for a career in that area. Security architect contractors (ten years experience) can probably get $150/hr.

If you think xero will break into the US market then i'd go with them.

Otherwise, i'd go for deloittes for long term career.

When I graduatedI had choice between 3 companies , including arthur andersen consulting -- lucky i didn't work for them as they broke up shortly after ha ha.

You don't really mention what either offer in the way of training. It might be best to go for the one that is willing to invest the most into your development.

Congrats in either case, you've done well.

In case you guys were being kept awake at night wondering, I chose to go with Xero. I start in February as an Infrastructure Engineer (Graduate). The money is better than Deloitte (at least initially, although long term is another story.) I also enjoyed the culture when I visited, and the people I spoke to genuinely enjoy working there. To me, the people I work with are more important than the job itself.

Was actually wondering about this earlier, starting to think about what I need to be doing career wise when I finish up my studies this year and remembered seeing this post a while ago.

This highlights the difference between the US and NZ. A friend of mine's daughter just graduated from USC in LA with a degree in communications. Deloitte recruited on campus during the last semester and she applied for a role as a consultant in Deloitte Digital. To cut a long story short she got hired (6 out of 200 applicants), has a starting salary of $72K and a $10K signing bonus! That's pretty good but doesn't compare with the money those who get recruited into large law firms or Google :-)

They will probably get their pound of flesh from her though.

No idea how much graduate hires for Deloitte are paid here but from what you say, more than Deloitte but if you work hard the path in Deloitte probably has greater prospects.
