Cyris: A couple of years ago, we had Vodacom in South Africa introduce per second billing to us, it was a major success and before you knew it, everyone changed over to Vodacom. It's really not a bad idea.

what do you mean by 'everyone'.. Vodacom has less than 60% market share in SA and has been in decline.

i think he meant most people that he know move to Vodacom

that would hardly count as a major success to Vodacom now would it.

Back then, considering everyone I knew or Met had moved over from MTN or CellC to Vodacom per second billing, I found this to be quite a success, who knows how many people moved over that I didn't know or didn't meet.

I have no idea how well Vodacom is doing now, I was referring to a couple of years ago.

You know, I distinctly remember Telecom NZ advertising last year that they bill per second after the first minute. Is this not the case any longer?

Vodafone were per second after the first minute for a few years but they have sinced canned that. Pretty sure the legacy prepay plans were second by second after first minute but it changed back with the introduction of "Super Prepay" which when it came out wasn't very "Super"....

Mobile termination rates are being regulated at the end of the month. You might see second+second billing once the Commerce Commission have released their final determination.

Vodafone on account is minute + second:

Each call has a minimum charge of 60 seconds. After the first minute Voice calls are billed per second. "Included minutes" include calls to all New Zealand mobiles and landlines.

I would beg to differ. The commerce commission is explicitly looking at wholesale pricing, and I fail to see how regulating the termination rate will affect the (out of scope) retail pricing and billing. Especially since if I recall correctly MTR is already second+second in some (all? I don't recall) cases anyway, and apart from a bare minimum of plans, this is not already passed on to customers.
