I have no idea on that phone.

In the settings for the cellular network, you should find something along the lines of connection type.

Nope, it's not "on this site", it's "by some people".

Do not confuse the opinions, behaviour of some people with the site's direction|intention|support.

I realise certain types of comment will naturally be made by a subset of users on the site, and I don't see how I confused the two at all. The phrase "comments ... on this site" does not in any way mean "comments by site management" nor does it imply any comment has the endorsement of site management.

As for the question, go to Settings | Mobile Data and you should see an option to use only GSM, only WCDMA or both. That's what you're looking for.

I dont think its locked, as i do get very limited signal in some areas.
I agree Skinnys $16 deal is great, but not even skinny sim works.
Telecoms deals are ok, but not for calling Australian mobiles.
Would 'rooting' the phone make a difference?

Rooting a device and unlocking it are two separate things. Being that your phone is not locked (from what I can tell) it makes no difference either way. Also as the phone is potentially faulty, I would avoid doing anything to void the warranty in case it needs to be replaced again.

Thanks again.
The only option i have is to "use only 2G networks" which i have tried without success.
Telegistics say there is no fault because it works on XT network, but im concerned that if i travel to more remote places that dont have 3g that i will lose signal altogether.
What really confuses me tho, the the lack of any signal using Skinny sim, if it uses the same newtwork. Or does skinny only use the 3G part of telecoms network?

Telecom's network is ONLY, 100% 3G. Skinny service is ONLY, 100% 3G.

2degrees has both 2G and 3G services mixed and in some areas only one or another depending on coverage. Hence the difference you may see if the phone is set to 3G only, seeing 2degress may not have 3G everywhere it operates.

According to GSM Arena, there are 2 basic models of this phone, that differ in the frequencies that they operate on.

One operates on HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 and the other HSDPA 900 / 2100.

Telecom will supply the model that includes 850MHz as that is what their network operates on. 2 Degrees (and Vodafone, depending on where you are) primarily use 900MHz and 2100MHz.

I suspect that when you are in town (you don't specify what town) you are getting 2D reception on the 2100MHz band, which is generally deployed in urban areas. When you are home (presumably slightly more isolated), there is probably no 2100 coverage, and the phone is looking for 850 coverage instead, when what it needs is 900MHz.

Now, both of those models support GSM (2G) at both 850 and 900MHz, so if this is the issue, as long as GSM is also activated, you should get a (slow) connection via 900MHz when this is available.

If you have both 2G & 3G activated, and still can't get any signal at home, it is possible the new phone is faulty, and not connecting on the 900MHz band.

I would have thought so, assuming there is no separate issue with the Skinny SIM you have.

UPDATE
Thanks for everyone who offered help and suggestions.
The answer in the end was that the phone itself was faulty. (diagnose by very helpful staff at both telecom shop and Telecom tech support)
Took it back to DSE and the swapped it.

FYI, It looks like Skinny are going to start doing Rollover minutes,

Also while skinnys aus calling and texting says it finishes the 31'st of Jan, Im betting it will be extended

The Y300 is also sold as locked to Telecom.

Excuse me the Y300 is not sim locked to telecom the OP has already said that he has tried this phone with a 2 degrees sim. As Skinny uses a different network code than telecom the Y300 if sim locked would not work on Skinny unless sim unlocked.

I don't think so? Im on Skinny, My SIM number/subscriber ID starts with 6405 or 896405 and if I look in my phone it says Operator: 53005 (Telecom NZ) and SIM Operator: 53005 (Skinny)

According to the list Telecom uses 530- 05 and Skinny uses 530- 06. Try and use a Telecom SIM in a locked Skinny handset will not work. Ditto the reverse.
